Re: "Mother's Day" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 8

I watched this last night via BD from Netflix. They sent it to me early because some of my other movies have waits so I went ahead and viewed it.

Gotta say that I liked it. It has a lot of idiotic and frustrating parts that either could have better acting, could be better written, or just makes you made at the players involved, but the movie still engaged me and is highly entertaining. It is one of those movies that makes you wonder what you would do if put into that situation.

All I gotta say is Rebecca De Mornay has aged very well and is still hot even with her Hillary Clinton haircut in this. She does play unstable pretty well chewing up tons of scenery as she goes along. The acting from a couple of her sons doesn't fair so well (especially the "super psycho" one), and one son apes Tim Roth from Reservoir Dogs so well that you would think it is his son. A lot of times you just have to go along with the fantastical parts that only seem to happen in movies like this but if you do, you will find an enjoyable film with lots of good kills.

I will say I like how the ambiguous opening ties up with the end very well.

Good choice, DEEveeDEE3.

My rating: ***1/2 out of *****

Re: "Mother's Day" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 8

Rebecca De Mornay is sizzling in Mother's Day and shines playing against otherwise generic characters (at first I thought these people were just disgruntled GAP employees). The mom theme played semi-serious is comedic yet tense in the remake but there are so many characters (none as well acted as by De Mornay) the film feels too busy at times and tension suffers (especially with the stupid toupee guy). The action keeps up throughout the near 2 hour play time; sometimes nearly an outright action film, others trending into torture porn. Still Mother's Day is a great gag with admirable pacing and worth seeing, thanks to DeeVeeDee for the recommendation. I'll have to hunt down and check out the original, it's amazing they remade a Troma film and considering the low budget originals the remake is all that much more impressive. The feminist undertones, at least in the remake, are interesting too.

I wonder if it is intentional that Beth and Mother both wearing similar bluish coats with white collars in the fight scene. Great ending.

Note to self, people will do unbelievable out of character travesties to each other for someone waving a gun and yelling (where has gun waving and yelling been all my life?).

7 out of 10 here.

Mother's Day doesn't seem to be streaming but is readily available at Redbox.

Edit: Fixed my rating showing up in Trevor's quote; no more posting before bed here.

Thanks Undeadcow. I'd Redbox it, but you have already given my rating so I guess I'll try to find something better to watch.

I personally think the original is fucking terrible and is a waste of your time. I don't remember it having much in common with the remake but I hated it so much that I have honestly blocked it from my memory.

I really dug this movie. What would you do to stay alive. Good acting all around but the spotlight was on the mom that stole the show. Nice seeing my favorite vampire but she didn't do much. The ending was predictable but still good. I think I will check out the original to see how it differs.

Hadn't seen this one and still haven't seen the original. Having said that I really enjoyed this movie. The tension was almost constant throughout and there were plenty of good twists to the story. What elevates this movie way beyond the usual fare is Rebecca De Mornay's performance which was stellar. She's at the same time terrifying and incredibly appealing, and yes, she's still hot! The rest of the actors were also quite good but didn't hold a candle to Ms. De Mornay who outshone them in every scene she was in. OK, enough gushing - the were a few flaws, mainly the usual problem of having characters behave like idiots in a few badly written scenes. But then again if you're a horror fan, you learn to just accept this.

This was a great home invasion film with some decent characters (perhaps a few too many, as some of the hostages I kept confusing). Entertaining for a recent horror thriller and I'm glad I watched it.

Allow me to join in the praise for DeMornay. She was terrific and terrifying. And she has to be one of the sexiest MILFs around. Just ask Stifler.

Re: "Mother's Day" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 8

I own what seems like thousands of horror films, yet you all have somehow picked 24 out of 31 subset films that I don't own. I'm willing to get Netflix for a month if I have to, but am trying to avoid it. "Renting isn't for me", but decided to re-take that plunge here rather than buy a bunch of titles at more than me usual prices. Almost redboxed this one, but instead got it and a couple other subset films at the local WonderVideo, where they have $1.99 weekly rentals. Huge selection, I think it will become a regular stomping ground. Sure, Redbox is cheaper, but I prefer the much larger selection and weekly rentals for the small upcharge.

Great film, although very disturbing. I usually dislike any "torture porn" films or scenes, but this film had enough other strong points to keep my interest. Rebecca DeMornay, as everyone has mentioned, was amazing. Still so beautiful, and so good at being sympathetic or downright evil.

Would like to think that I'd never turn on an innocent, but would probably die trying to take out the bad guy. But yeah, one never knows how they'd react until they're in the position.

I think that's a common reaction to Troma films.

I did smile when I saw Lloyd Kaufman listed as a producer on this new version. Sure, it's most likely just part of his compensation for the original, but he has credits on some pretty legit stuff alongside his Troma output...My Dinner with Andre for example, which he did actually work on.

Watched the original Mother's Day today as well. The recent version shares so little with the original it might as well be it's own flick.

Re: "Mother's Day" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 8

First-time viewing.
It's already been beaten to death with the comments, but yeah, De Mornay is still damn hot

This turned out to be a surprise! Home-invasion flicks tend to often lose my interest as viewer, but this one sure did a fine job in keeping me glued to what was going on. My most favorite moment had to have been the excellent editing involving the scenes between the house and the hospital. Great tension there!

BTW, I had no idea that this was supposed connect with the original, but once I heard the sons' names, as well as noticing Kaufman's cameo on the TV, I just went, "No way!". Then there was my favorite line from the original, "You backwards perverted piece of shit!" It's yelled out very quickly, but damn, you should've seen the grin on my face when it was said.

Good choice, DEEveeDEE3.
Ditto!

Re: "Mother's Day" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 8

Better-than-expected remake of the 1980 cult film. Director Darren Lynn Bousman may make a great film yet. This one isn’t it, but it’s another step in the right direction. Radical rethinking of the original film is at least twenty minutes too long, but there are some very good performances to help make up for it. Rebecca de Mornay turns it up to eleven as the mother--she’s probably as full-tilt in this one as she was in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Movie is graphically gory, so if that bothers you, you may want to steer clear of it. My major complaint: If you’ve seen the original, the last minute appearance of the character Queenie was a high point of the film. Queenie was mentioned several times in the remake, but she never showed up. Color me mighty disappointed.

I also never saw the original but really liked this film. I'm also not a fan of 'torture porn' used in most current horror movies and appreciated that it didn't only focus on that aspect/overdo it either. I have always been a fan of rebecca de mornay in the hand that rocks the cradle and thought she did a great job here as an evil villian. This is definitely the type of film that makes you wonder what you would do in their shoes and you NEVER want to be in their shoes. I thought the ending was wickedly good for going out with a bang too.

I enjoyed Mother's Day, probably moreso than any other film in that "home invasion" category of horror movies.

I noticed Mother's Day was airing last night and started watching just a minute or two after it began. As I turned it on, a security guard was standing in a door way. Just as a woman and a baby appear before him, someone else kills the guard and the title of the film then appears. Question for anyone who can help--did I miss anything else or was that the extent of that opening scene?

You missed the mother getting past the guard and snatching the baby but that was nothing since I gather you guessed she stole the baby.
