Okay folks, with all of the versions of Halloween out there, which one has the definitive best audio/video quality? Special features don't matter, I want to know the best possible quality.

I would honestly wait awhile before purchasing the title if you looking for the best audio/visual. I wouldn't be surprised if this is released as a high-def release at or before next fall.

Unfortunately I wont be converting to hi-def for quite some time. I am really interested in the best quality standard DVD to show my girlfriend who has never seen this film before we go see the remake in august.

There have been several recent threads on this same thing, so take a look around and you'll find all the details within the first couple pages of threads. There is an LE that is OOP that is the best one so far (has a lenticular cover), but new footage has surfaced since then and an anniversary edition could come along that incorporates the lost footage in (the 30th Annivesary is next year, right?).

if you have a large screen display, the divimax release is the only one that looks good- the other, earlier release has just too much issues in the way of compression artifacting.

the only problem with the divimax release, is that the color timing is different. Previous incarnations of the film had an extreme blue tint in some of the darker scenes, which is far more toned down on the DM/25 release.
For me, with a front projector, the earlier version while it may have been more accurate (or familiar) color-wise, was still unwatchable anyway due to all the compression issues. The new one is a big improvment in this respect, however a lot of fans can't abide the color differences. I can- on my system, it's definitely the lesser of two evils if I want to enjoy the material.

The 25th anniversary edition does have the best extras though- without a doubt.
The doc is worth the price of the disc anyway- but you aren't interested in those.

Agree with Paul_SD.

I think Divimax looks better, if you have High Definition TV.

Many people on this board will be quick to pick the earlier release as looking better due to the color timing. However, others have said that Dean Cundey added the "blue tint" once Halloween was released on video. In other words, the Divimax may be the version that match the original theatrical release.

Sorta like how Robert Richardson tweak the color timing on the laserdisk of Platoon while the DVD of Platoon resemble the original theatrical showing.

Exactly. The Limited Edition is audio/video wise identical to the one-disc version (the single disc release is basically Disc 1 of the LE), however, it's OOP. If you're only concerned with the best A/V quality, go with the single-disc.

Banky, go ahead and buy the Halloween: 25th Anniversary Edition. I ignored the whole "color timing" controversy and bought it a few years ago. And I am glad I did because the picture quality is very good - the best and sharpest I've ever seen the movie look. And the extras on this release are really good too, with a great commentary track (which was lifted from a previous laserdisc release) and a great documentary on the making of the movie.

I like the Cundey approved, but both transfers are very good IMO, you can only go wrong if you get the earliest AB version which was a disaster.
