They’re have been numerous threads, asking which Halloween DVD is the best; sadly I have no link so my banter is less witty.
That's ok, you're quoting something I said over 1 year ago!

So in my personal opinion it wouldn't be far-fetched to suggest that Anchor Bay might do an Ultimate 4-Disc Edition in 2008 ala Dawn of the Dead...but I don't know for sure. Just something to keep in mind.
The 2-Disc Divimax version is still in print, along with the 1-disc version w/ the THX transfer. The Limited Edition (which is essentally the 1-disc version with the extended TV version) is OOP.

As a completist, I own both copies. And like you, I'm positive that there will be a multi-disc Ultimate Edition coming up next year for the 30th Anniversary. I just hope it has ALL the features of the previous releases (so I could retire these), along with a new transfer w/ the best of both releases (the clearer picture of the Divimax & the coloring of the THX release).

I can see a big special edition coming for the 30th Anniversary. And since this is one of my favorite movies of all time... the wait is agony, and I'm aching to see that newly found footage! Hope Anchor Bay is able to license it from Synapse...

The link at the beginning of this thread with the "Side by Side" comparison shots of the 2 versions is no longer a working link - Does anyone know what the working link might be?

Does anyone have any info on what to expect for the Blu-Ray release? Most likely the same transfer from the recent divimax, right?

Re: Which "Halloween" DVD version is the best?

From your description, I think the version you have is the '99 THX transfer (it should have a THX banner on the case, and a 1999 copyright on the back), which was done before the '03 Divimax transfer.

To summarize this thread: the Divimax transfer looks better from a technical standpoint, but the THX transfer has the cinematographer Dean Cundey-approved color timing.

Re: Which "Halloween" DVD version is the best?

I've read reports that Carpenter himself supervised the DiviMax transfer, and that that's how the film looked in theaters 30+ years ago. I've also heard that Cundey tweaked the film to look how he felt it should have when he supervised his transfer. Now, I don't know if any of that is true or not, but the Blu-ray of the film does look pretty damn good. So, when I'm in the mood to watch the film that's what I choose.

Re: Which "Halloween" DVD version is the best?

I have heard some say that the Divimax color timing was closer to how it looked in the original theatrical release and the Cundey color timing was done later for video releases, but I've never heard any conclusive proof other than some vague, sketchy "I think the film look liked that when I saw it in the 70's". You'd think Carpenter would have commented on it in the 6 years since its release so we'd have a conclusive answer, but I haven't read anything. Maybe if and when he does press for The Ward someone will ask.
