I am currently using DCM KX-212 for mains, kx-6s for surrounds and the DCM center channel that matches those (can't recall the number off my head). What I am getting at is, I do not have a powered Sub and thought about purchasing one but am asking do I actually need one. My speakers are very big, but are also very clear and sound great in DTS or DD. Does anyone have this set up with a sub? If so is there really that much difference that would make it worth my while to buy one? I am new at this and have been looking for other threads about DCM speakers, but have not been able to come up with any. Thanks

2 questions:

1) How low do your main speakers go? This answer should be in Hz, rather than "pretty low" or "low enough". Check your owner's manual.

2) Do you think you need a sub? I realize that you're not sure if you're missing much on the bottom end or not, but are you satisfied with how deep and loud your system plays?

I have a Yamaha receiver with 2 12" speakers as my mains and I have a sub! The sub makes a huge difference! I also have my DVD player configured so that it knows I have a sub.... I never actually tried it without the sub but I know the sub does things my mains can not.

They are sensitive to 30 hz. I just figured that with a total of 4 12inch woofers in my mains i would not need one. It seems that I might be missing out on something.

I think a sub isn't always necessary, but definitely can make a difference. It's like the jello that holds all the sound together, for lack of a better way to describe it.

Sure, you can still get good sound without one, but I've never met anyone who can't tell when they turn on the sub, or doesn't think it's an improvement.
