Dolby Digital or DTS??

I posted this elsewhere, but I think I put it in the wrong place.

What exactly is the difference between the two? Does one sound better than the other? What is your personal favorite?

I'm no expert, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but to my understanding, the main difference is that DTS is not as compressed as DD, therefore the sound is of a better quality.
