every receiver i've seen has a tape monitor feature. WTF does it do?

It allows me to record to my tape player when I have it on...I have a separate "tape" function which allows only playback, so I have to turn on "tape monitor" to be able to record.

For me it does nothing but piss me off when I can't figure out why I can't get a damn thing out of my speakers until I figure out that the Tape Monitor is turned on by accident.

It also allows me to run an equalizer and spectrum analyzer through the sound path.
