The player should just down-res and send to the TV as 1080p if I'm not mistaken. That said, I went through this last year when I had a 4K player and not a 4K TV, and the colors on the 4K disc down-res were darker and not quite right vs. playing the actual Blu-ray through the same setup. This was with the Black Panther discs. I wound up speeding up my decision to get a 4K UHD display as a result.

so basically no point to get a 4K disc if it would look off?

The color conversion of the HDR found in 4K content does occasionally look off when downconverted to regular 1080P - it varies in effect from movie to movie. Some people find it's okay, but others prefer the native 1080P Blu-ray. 4K downconversions are slightly more impressive in terms of detail and definition than native 1080P Blu-rays.

ok, i think i got it. 4K disc will play and may or may not look better, but more likely than not will look better than a regular Bluray 1080p disc?

Well a 1080p disc, when remastered as 1080p, looks great and possibly better than when a 4K disc is downrezed to 1080p. Note some reviews on other sites, both are compared and sometimes you’ll see the blu ray presentation get bigger marks than the 4K one. In those times, the HDR and/or DV affects the image from being pristine.

Either way if you think you're going to get a 4K TV at some point it makes sense to buy the 4K UHD disc since it will have the Blu-ray in it too. Has there even been a release yet that didn't include a Blu-ray?
