Receiver doesn't have hdmi audio how do I get 5.1 with a roku 3?

So my receiver has hdmi but it doesn't support audio. My tv is a panny plasma tc-p50u50. It has hdmi and spdif (as does my receiver). The roku 3 only has hdmi, no separate audio out. How can I get 5.1 sound to my receiver? From what I've read that if I go hdmi to tv and spdif from tv to receiver then I will only get stereo sound. Is this correct? If so what is my cheapest option to get the audio to my receiver in 5.1?

Link to my tv just incase....

Some TVs will still pass 5.1 signals from HDMI sources to their optical outputs, though if anything uses Dolby Digital Plus or TrueHD, or DTS-HD, it will be downrezzed to the lossier formats. The TV I got in 2010 could do it, so one from 2012 should be able to, of course you have to at least try.

From page 32 of the TV manual:
http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/TCP50U50.PDF
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal
You can enjoy your Home theater by connecting a Dolby Digital (5.1 channel) decoder and “Multi Channel” amplifier to the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminals.

Caution
  • Depending on your DVD player and DVD-Audio software the copyright protection function may operate and disable optical output.
  • When an ATSC channel is selected, the output from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack will be Dolby Digital. When an NTSC channel is selected, the output will be PCM.
  • When playing a movie on SD Card Movie player, when the sound has been recorded in Dolby Digital, the output from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal will be Dolby Digital. When the sound is recorded in other formats, the output will be PCM.

thanks. it looks like plex will solve my HD sound problem (fingers crossed im setting it up now). netflix and all other apps the sound is fine, its just files that have a problem. it seems to be a roku codec limitation.
