Sony Blu-ray Audio Settings Advice

I have a BDPS360 running HDMI to the TV and the audio running from the optical (via TOSlink cable) output to a soundbar.

I fiddled with the settings and the found that while viewing the feature in TrueHD or DTS-AM the sound effects were loud enough but the dialogue was too low.

After a few more adjustments, the mix was better for the feature but when I switched to the extras (probably Dolby Digital, not TrueHD) it was way too loud.

Is there a recommendation of audio settings that would work for everything on the disc? My soundbar is a VIZIO VSB200 and does not decode Dolby Digital or DTS.

Given my equipment, is making constant adjustments in the audio menu just a necessary inconvenience?

I think the Sony audio options are consistent with most of their models, so any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Sony Blu-ray Audio Settings Advice

I tinkered around with the audio settings and answered my own question.

Here are the settings I found worked really well. Here they are should someone else encounter the same problem.

I think most Sony players (BDPS350/360/370 etc.) have similar audio options in their menus.

Audio Out Priority: Coaxial/optical
Audio (HDMI): 2 ch PCM
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio ATT: Off
Dolby Digital: Downmix
DTS: Downmix
48 Khz/16bit
Audio DRC: Standard
Downmix: Normal

These settings should give you a balaned mix of sound effects and dialogue.

This is probably useful for anyone using just TV speakers, a soundbar, or other stereo speakers.

But for tv speakers only, like we have in the bedroom, wouldn't you want to select HDMI, if you're using HDMI to the HDTV, instead of choosing coaxial/optical?

And does it really matter if you have 2 ch PCM or Auto or if you use Auto for Audio DRC?

Otherwise that's exactly how our bedroom Sony player is set up.

Re: Sony Blu-ray Audio Settings Advice

Sure, HDMI would be the choice for that.

It's the downmix and DRC settings that confuse people. BD is not as user-friendly as we'd all like.
