Bad Toslink optical cable-Sound drop outs?

Hi,
I've got a PS3 connected to my trust Onkyo 494 receiver (Circa 2002). I recently have had a problem with the audio dropping out. I also have my cable box and Apple airport express connected to it via digital inputs and have not had any issue.

The PS3 is otherwise working fine as is the receiver. This is leading me to think that the issue is the TOSlink optical cable. Is it possible that a damaged cable could cause this? I know these cables are fragile so I'm hoping that's all it is.

I went ahead and replaced it and so far after several hours of usage no dropouts so hoping the cable was the culprit!
