Bluray and Hooks to My Internet - what to buy?
I'm about to take the plunge and get my first (I know, I'm behind) blu-ray player. But in doing so, I also want to replace my old dlink dsm-320 that allowed me to wirelessly stream avi files from my external hard disk attached to my computer.
In fact, I'll probably use the streaming from my computer more than the blu ray.
I saw a Vizio at Costco that was blu-ray with "wifi builtin" versus "ready".
Anyone know if that's a good choice? Other thoughts? Other recommendations?

The Wi Fi on the Vizio is ONLY for streaming content from the applications like Netflix/Vudu/Pandora. Most Vizios that I'm aware of don't stream from your home network, or even play .avi files.
I used to have a Samsung BDP-3600 that did wireless streaming from my network & also played a variety of formats from the USB drive. It was very buggy & difficult to stay connected though. But I didn't really realize that was such a rarity until I decided to replace it.

Well, that would rule the Vizio out.
The DSM-320, even though it only supported WEP did better than that. I use TVersity to make it work well.
The box ad from Costco, implied it did more like what I want, but I would not be surprised to find you are right, which is why I am asking.

Costco has a 90 day no questions asked electronics return policy.
There are streaming boxes from Apple, Roku, and others that start under $100. Or, the PS3 is popular for handling streaming, bluray, and the games of course.

Yeah, I'll probably just get something from Costco and see if it does what I need, and return if it does not.

ok, so what should i get in the upnp/dlna arena to play wirelessly from my computer into another room.
sounds like i have to separate the bluray concept from the wireless play from computer concept.

I have just started to dabble a bit in streaming from pc. Windows 7 natively supports DLNA you just have to tell it what and where the files are that you want to share. You dont need any special software. That being said not all devices will play all file formats. I have both a PS3 and a Sony BDP-S370. They both support DLNA but the PS3 seems to support more of my files. I don't think I have any avi files but my guess is they both would stream avi fine, its the newer HD formats that vary a bit. If you want built in wifi the Sony BDP-S580 has it and support quit a bit of streaming options including DLNA, it also supports USB drives directly connected for file playback.
