Best Buy buy back program

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in.

Apparently on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb 6) Best Buy will announce their "buy back" program (during the 3rd quarter) in which they will let you know up front how much they will buy back your new TV (or any new technology) purchase. Good thing I didn't make an impulse buy last week for a new TV. I'm wondering if this will turn out to be a good deal (i.e. will my new plasma TV just be worth $50 in 5 years?). Hopefully we'll get more details soon.

Just buy a TV that you won't want to get rid of in 5 years.

It's really good on cell phones because it comes from the retail price of the phone, not what you pay for it.

I'm not sure how it works on TV's.

So, purchase a TV for $1000, use buyback in a few months, receive $500 back. Hardly a good rental price. Plus, the program costs money, too.

Yup, just another way to make a fool part with their money...

Agreed. One could likely do much better with Craigs or classified. The drop in payback is precipitous. But they trumpet it like "buyer protection." Why not? Something new to advertise...

On cell phones, you actually make money.

You are making one key assumption that may or may not be true - that you would be eligible for the AR price on the new phone that you are buying. You may very well have to pay full retail for it, in which case you aren't.

If you have to wait two years, you may not be any better off, once you factor in the purchase price of the program.

I don't think you are carrying out the math all the way.

Re: Best Buy buy back program

I guess the reason why Best Buy have implemented this policy is because, the retailer is fully aware that certain customers go out, and purchase HDTV's specifically for the Super Bowl, and return them afterwards. Many people have been doing this for years.
