I believe you mean 6.1....not sure when these are suppose to be out!!! I know some of the DVD movies being released now are supporting this new sound format!! Someone else may know specific release dates of receivers and software.

djones,

There are receivers out capable of 7.1 surround sound. Onkyo 989 and Pioneer Elite VSX-37TX, 38TX, and 39TX. All of these have 7.1 decoders in them. Now whether or not DVD players that output Dolby Digital can output any format (ie. 5.1 or 4.0 or 7.1) is another question.

No Problem! :-) I am hoping to get one of the Pioneer Elite models soon. Hope it is worth the $900. We shall see.

steak,
Which receiver are you getting? I am looking at the 36 Elite, Denon 3300, Onkyo 777, Sony 777Es.
Thoughts to share?

The Onkyo 989 and the new top of the line Yamaha for example do indeed advertise 7.1 sound. This is achieved through the addition of two more discrete amplifiers in the unit and matrixing technology. Essentially the DVD player sends over the standard 5.1 Dolby Digital or 5.1 DTS source and the receiver decodes it as normal. Right before amplification circuitry inside "guesses" as to sonic position and content normally located between the center channel and left and right channels. A sound signal will then be outputted to those two additional speakers.

I am interested mainly in the Pioneer 36TX. Price is always an issue for me. I like to get the most bang for the buck and I can get this receiver online at crazyeddies for $899 plus shipping. Not to shabby.

The distinction should be made that the Pioneers that feature 7.1 processing do not have 7 discrete amplifiers. Only the Onkyo and the Yamaha will be able to power seven speakers, the Pioneer you mention puts out 110 watts/channel X 5.

Thanks for the info Dave. I thought that price might be low for the same performance as the Onkyo. What does this mean in terms of gaining true 7.1 surround?

Having not seen the physical receiver I will do my best to guess...

The Pioneer 36TX should have 7.1 preouts (8 analog RCA jacks carrying an unamplified channel source). You could theoretically connect five speakers (Left, Right, Center, Right Rear, Left Rear) directly to the receiver and have that serve as your amp. Connect the sub via the line level output like normal. Then, with an additional stereo or prologic receiver, connect the two additional, unused preouts (the 6 and 7 in 7.1) to the 2nd receiver. Connect two additional speakers to the 2nd receiver and you should have 7.1 sound...
