My dad is thinking of entering the world of DVD. He has a great older carver setup but it does not have the newer decoders. So, he will need to get a player with good onboard decoders to start to keep the cost and space requirement down.

Any suggestions? I was thinking the Panasonic A-320 might do the job. My friend in a similar situation loves his.

Toshiba 3109, maybe a Pioneer 626. At the end of '99, Panny's had an alarming number of "died-after-warranty" threads, more than the other brands, usu. pixelation. Just a few post's back, report of FOUR dead panny's:

Got rid of mine for that reason alone. Yes,the majority of panny's work, the 320's are newer, but ...

Now, I've got a Pioneer which definitely has better picture quality than my original Panny (and a longer warranty). Sometimes mobshop or Mercata have the 3109 for around $200.
Mobshop's %20 coupon really helps.
