? on Onkyo Listening Modes - what do you use and when?

To those of us who are using Onkyo receivers – especially the Onkyo 605 – what listening modes do you use when you are playing CDs, DVDs and Blu Ray?

I am using an Oppo 981 for DVDs and PS3 for Blu Ray. They are hooked up via HDMI. I also use the Oppo to play DVD-As and SACDs. For SACDs I use the analog input. While I am happy with using DVD Pure Audio listening mode while playing CDs on the Oppo, I am still fiddling with what is the ideal listening modes for DVDs, Blu Ray and DVD-A/ SACD for that matter.

Any input would be appreciated, thank you

I think modes on a home theater revceiver are all a matter of personal taste. These pre-determined sound eq curves sound good in some rooms and not so good in others. Same with people, I suggest you try each one out and use the one that sounds the best to your ears.

I'm old-fashioned when it comes to these, as I keep 2-channel material in 2 channels (but with the sub). I will use the Audyssey settings though, provided they sound better.

For SACD and DVD-A, I refuse to listen to anything but the original. For CD, sometimes I'll let DPLII Music play with it, it is surprisingly good at creating surround when properly tuned. Does the 605 have all the controls for DPLII Music?

I've played with other modes and never really liked them.

my instruction manual for the 605 says, "dolby digital and dts listening modes can only be selected if your dvd player is connected to the receiver with a digital audio connection (coaxial or optical)."

i am connecting a philips dvp642 to the onkyo 605. right now it's just hooked with the basic (RCA) connections. my t.v. is still an old CRT, but this stuff will be passed through via hdmi when i get a new t.v. (4-6 months, prolly).

so--i want to hook up my dvd player with something nicer. i've mostly decided on co-axial, but there's a lot. is this basically what i'm looking for?

any help would be appreciated.

I don't really get much out of listening modes, unless it's 2-channels. So I choose whatever the original track is (ie. DD for DD, PCM for PCM, etc...) for anything with more channels than stereo. When you get a 5.1 signal or higher, the mixing is included and should sound decent. If it doesn't, then it's a mixing problem and listening modes won't help much.
