Sending TV audio to micro system speakers?

Seeing as how there isn't much space in my cluttered living room for a multi-speaker surround set-up (and the fact that I'm currently using my HDTV's built-in speakers for sound), I have a crazy (stupid?) idea of sending the TV audio to the audio-in of my Sony micro-system.

Anyone ever tried something like this? Will the results be better than the TV's speakers (in particular, since there is no center channel when re-routing the audio this way)? Would the non-magnetically shielded micro=system speakers damage the TV if placed on either side? Etc, etc.

The only reason why this thought crossed my mind is because when the audio track contains low bass I can hear the reverberation that it causes inside the HDTV's cabinet/body, so I always have to turn the volume down appropriately.

What kind of micro system is this? About how big are the speakers? I'm guessing they would sound better, as long as they're not tiny. Try it and see.

The magnetic shielding won't apply to LCD (including LCD rear projection/LCOS), plasma, or DLP displays. It's only for CRTs.

I used to do this with a boombox, and later with a bookshelf system. Always worked great compared to the crappy TVs I had back then. I've thought about it right now for one of my SDTVs, but haven't bothered since this TV's speakers are decent.
