Well, I hate to chime in for fear of being chastised but I currently use the Bose Acoustimass 10 Home Entertainment System in my quasi-home theater setup in the family room. I knew full well of Bose's hype before we purchased however the wife wanted the Bose system and in the end she won (I fought her as long as I could but don't all wives usually win? ). Fast forward 2 years and the Bose is still rockin. I don't have any regrets and the wife is happy. I haven't really noticed a difference (sometimes when I play GH2 I notice some scratching like noises) but then again maybe I don't know what I'm missing. However, when I build my proper home theater in the basement, no Bose will ever be part of the configuration.

I've had two Bose setups over the last 20 years, and I'll say this; I like them, they sound great, and I've gotten far more than my money's worth out of them. One system is 20 years old and is still kicking like the day I bought it. The other one my wife had when we got married; it had sat outside in a garage in a cardboard box in the Texas heat for over TWO FUCKING YEARS. I was going to sell it; I brought it in the house and hooked it up to be sure it still worked before I sold it (though I expected it to be ruined at that point, honestly). It sounded so damn good, it's now the main audio setup in our main viewing room.

Screw what everyone says (including me). If you like what you hear, and are willing to pay the price, buy Bose. It lasts forever (well, mine has), sounds fine, and is rugged as hell.

I personally think people are just snobs when it comes to A/V gear.

Did you read my story a few posts up? Describing first-hand experience with the bad sound reproduction?

I am far from being a music snob. I think Sony makes good stuff (current system is Sony), I enjoy Stevie Nicks' singing, and I even like the dialogue in the Star Wars movies. And I could tell the Bose system did not sound good.

I personally think people have no idea what something is supposed to sound like. Like the poster who thinks scratchy audio is ok. That means it is BROKEN.

Bose fanboy here. I purchased a set of Bose 601 Series II speakers over 20yrs ago and I wouldn't trade them for anything on the market today. I think they sound great! Last year I bought myself the Bose Sound Dock for my iPod, Companion 5 multimedia speaker system for my computer, and a set of Bose In-ear headphones.

I couldn't be happier with any other brand.

Bose is to faithful audio replication as Meet The Spartans is to sophisticated satire
Bose is to faithful audio replication as Britney Spears is to good parenting skills
Bose is to faithful audio replication as Jessica Simpson is to intelligence
Bose is to faithful audio replication as Mel Gibson is to thoughtful religious discourse
Bose is to faithful audio replication as Lindsay Lohan is to restrained celibacy
Bose is to faithful audio replication as Rosie O'Donnell is to hot 'n' sexy

and so on and so forth.

Listening to Bose makes me miss 8-track cartridges and those cardboard flexidiscs you used to get on the back of cereal boxes.

If you ever want to replace the Bose system but your wife wants a certain look, check out the offerings from Orb Audio: http://www.orbaudio.com/.

After throwing around a couple of brands he mentions BOSE. I see how most people trash bose on this and other forums, and told him not to bother with it. When he asks why I really didnt know what to say except for the amount of money you would spend on bose equipment, you can get something much better from Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon, etc.
Is Bose as bad as everyone says (and why) or just overpriced ?
Bose is pretty good stuff... for most people it's a step up from what they would normally get at Target or Walmart... but Bose brings out rather mindless zealotry, as shown in this thread, for some reason... Bose is not high end stuff as to audio quality...

i would suggest a pair of 'Definitive Technology Studio Monitor' 450's for midrange speaker systems... they really are spectacular...

lots of bang for the buck...

if he likes to spend big he can get the Definitive Technology Mythos Home Theatre setup... that setup is amazing... the sound is incredible... i may get that very setup myself...

Link to PDF article...

Actually, you are incorrect. Bose is not pretty good stuff. That's pretty much what some of us have been pointing out above. Their cube speakers are no better than other cheap crap available at Target or Walmart. That is pretty much the point.

Their bookshelf speakers and some of the towers (400-700 series) are ok quality, no better than anything Best Buy might sell. The 901s are actually lower quality, closer to the cubes.

I base these comments on my ears, little else. The mindless zealotry has been created by one of the greatest marketing schemes known to man, convincing people that price matters above all else. (see Monster Cable and Microsoft for additional info)

Good call. I am an admitted KEF whore, these are some of my favorites,

http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-.../KEFKHT3005BLK

Or the less expensive version,

http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-...EFKHT20052SLVA

Or the "on a budget" version,

http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-.../KEFKHT1005BLK

See that use to be the one thing Bose had going for it, speakers that could fit in a decor. Now many good speaker makers have products that fit in any decor that sound very good to excellent.

I recently heard the Mirage and they are very nice and have a nice look to them,
