List Your Home Theater Gear....
I'm always interested in seeing what other Home Theater fans are running equipment wise and what they've spent SO FAR on there gear so I figured I'd see who we have here that spends more than any human should on Movie gear.
I don't have an overly expensive setup right now but I'm always upgrading. My rundown: TV: Hitachi 50VS810 50” LCD $2300 DVD: Samsung DVD-HD850 Upconverting HDMI Player $170 Philips AP642/37 Region Free Player $70 Reciever: Onkyo TX-SR803B $1000 Speakers: Infinity Primus 360 Towers x 2 $560 (Fronts) Infinity Primus C25 $180 (Center) Infinity Primus 160 Bookshelfs x 2 $260 (Rears) Subwoofer: Velodyne DPS-12 12” Powered Sub $550 Other: MonsterPower HTS2600 Power Surge Center $350 MonsterPower SW200 Subwoofer Power Center $50 Logitech Harmony 880 Universal Remote $250 Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR/Cable Box – Free, lol…

Off the top of my head:
Projector: Sanyo PLC-XP21N $5,600 DVD: Philips AP642/37 Region Free Player $70 (hey, I've got one of these, too) Panasonic RP56 $159 (a steal since it has the Sage/Faroudja chipset, but not the higher price tag because they didn't put the "DCDI" logo on front; see this linkp) Processor: Pioneer VSX-D812 $300 (was supposed to be temporary, but the thing rules as a processor using pre-amp outs) Amp: ATI-1505 $1500 (unbelievable value) Speakers: Martin Logan SL3 x2 $2000 (Fronts) (Got 'em used years ago) Martin Logan Aerius x2 $1000 (Backs) (Got 'em used years ago) Margin Logan Theater $2500 (Center) (Had to get this one new) Subwoofer: Some cheap Kenwood powered sub $200 (probably upgrade this pretty soon, although it does a pretty good job) Total: $13,329. Adds up fast, doesn't it. |

Right now that plan includes Wilson Sophia II speakers, EMM Labs Meitner DCC2 DAC/preamp, Meitner CDSD, and a Krell FPB 700cx. ![]() Although I am always looking to upgrade, I'm actually really happy with the system right now. I live in a small apartment (I'm only 25 and still in law school), so it does the trick. My room is a limiting factor though and I hope to buy a place soon with a proper room for HT / 2-ch. I'm old-school, and a bit cheap.
Monitor: Sony KV-36XBR250 (at 9 year's old, starting to show its age) DVD: Philips DVP-642/37 gen 1 (the torrenter's pal) VCR: Mistubishi HS-U50 (almost 20 years old, and still flawless) Audio: Logitech z-680 5.1 DD/DTS decoder/amp/speaker system (impressive sound for $250) Remote: Radio Shack 15-2117 (RF) Remote Control (JP-1 is my co-pilot) Broadcast: DishNetwork DVR-522 (cheaper than DirecTV for my channel choices) Game systems: Atari 2600, NES, N64, PS1 (for modern gaming, I use my PC)

Displays:
ECP 4500+ CRT HD projector: $700 (would be $600 if the $50 remote wasn't broken and had I not wasted $50 on a custom crate that FedEx stripped). Simply better than LCD/DLP. The cinema can't even touch the black levels from it. CRT projector = Best Bang For Your Buck. This one often gives me a better experience than the theater. I even find myself complaining about the picture at my local cinema, especially due to the weak black level compared to the CRT pj. This is my serious viewing projector. InFocus 4805 (built in Faroudja chip) 16:9 DLP EDTV projector: $500 after rebate (black Friday sale). This is my ambient light, occasional tv watching and gaming projector. 55" Toshiba 55x81 CRT HDTV (rarely use this one anymore. The convergence board is messed up). Screen: Homemade 9ft High Gain Silver Torus (horizontally & vertically curved): $130 Sound: $50 Regent HT-391 130-watt Wal-Mart 6 speaker surround sound sytem I bought as a joke originally and ended up really liking it. Video Processor: Athlon XP 3000+ HTPC w/ZoomPlayer Pro and FFDShow with one DVD Burner (set to Region 2 for playing R2 discs) and one DVD-Rom (set to region 1 for US discs). 512mb DDR PC3200 memory, ATI Radeon 9250 Graphics card: About $450. Game Systems: X-Box, PS2 (until it was robbed from my cousin's house when he was borrowing it), GameCube, Dreamcast & Nintendo 64: Have no clue what I paid for all of these. Screenshots of InFocus 4805 on 9ft Torus screen taken with DV Camcorder (Images are MUCH more saturated in person) in ambient light (matte white for comparison): The projector was slightly tilted on this shot. The shots were taken in ambient light to not only show of the screen's ambient light performance, but also because my camcorder doesn't do so well in the dark. The CRT projector is EASILY the superior projector and can more than hold it's own against $20,000+ digital projectors in image quality (none can touch its black levels though), but it's hard to get a good screenshot from since CRTs are best with no lights at all. My next upgrade will probably be either an 8" EM Focus HD CRT projector or a 9" LC CRT projector. |
