I have a Pioneer dv-444 dvd player/vsx-c300 combo home theatre system. I believe it is a 500 watt system. The bass tube has an adjustable knob on the back and I use the "super bass" feature. I've reached an equilibrium point to where everything sounds fine.
The problem is on some really, heavy bass moments on certain dvds, especially dts, the bass "drops" out (I think that's the appropiate term) or w/ too much bass it makes a wet sound.
What's the solution? Do I need that monster cable for the amplipher to the bass tube? Or do I need to adjust the knob to have less bass? I usually have it at 3/4 of its total power. Or do I need to play dvds w/o the "super bass" feature? Or what?

It is hard to tell from your description what the actual sound is. If it just goes away it maybe the sub itself. The sub you have will only play down to something like 50~60hz after that you will not hear any lower base. If this is it then the only cure is a sub upgrade.

If it's true your system goes down to only 50-60Hz. then indeed that is why you have the bass drop signifigantly on low bass passages.

If the bass totally DROPS OUT on low bass passages then it's seems more a equipment problem with the sub itself where it is malfuncting when pushed.
