Progressive Scan DVD Player.. with MP3 playback any ideas?
I was looking at the Toshiba SD5109, it is pretty nice but has no MP3 playback. I want to spend under $350 and find a decent multidisk, progressive scan, component output, dvd player. Any suggestions appreciated.

The 5109 is an old DVD player. I just got the Toshiba SD5700 and it's awesome. Only single disc though but it plays everything except for SVCDs. I got it for $250 from J&R.

Panasonic RP-56 is a great player. It's single disc. However, it plays MP3s, is progressive, has the Sage chip and can be had for around $200.

I went with JVC XVSA70B. A friend has the 7 disk DVD-Audio, Progressive Scan, MP3 etc... He got it for $296. I would not use the 7 disk changer at all, I currently have a 3 disk Apex and hardly have more than 1 DVD inserted. So I got the single disk version for $215. I read many reviews that this DVD player was much better than that of those costing more.

It's considered to be the best deinterlacer on the market and usually found only in high-end players. The RP-56 is s steal at $200 with this chip.
You can read more about it and a RP-56 test here:

get the JVC-XVSA70BK over the Panasonic. While thre Panasonic is a slightly better MP3 player, the JVC blows it out of the water in every single other regard (DVD picture quality, build, remote, menus, appearance...)
I bought both, tried them side by side, and it wasnt' even close, and the Panasonic wnt back within 2 days.
I did a complete comparison on www.hometheaterspot.com, look in the JVC forum.

I just ordered the Panasonic RP-56 after reading all the great reviews for it online and here. I ordered it from Sears.com and got it on sale plus an additional 10% off of that. I picked it up the next day from thier store pick up.
I must say the player is great. It even plays the DVD's my old Toshiba 4109 could not, such as Disk 3 of the Buffy set. The load times are much faster also and the picture and sound are fantastic. I did have to buy a new optical cable because all the ads said that the RP-56 had a Digital Coax output like my Toshiba did. Let me say though that it certainly does not.
For under $200 this player is an excellent buy.

It seems like there's a real strong debate on other forums between the JVC and the Panasonic players over all their features and which is better. Seeing as how real audiophiles and videophiles seem to be split on the issue, I'd say you can't really go wrong with either.
I bought the JVC and am very happy with it.

I agree with dstrauss, in that we are debating over the #1 and #2 ranked players in this category (Prog Scan under $300). While I think the JVC is better, I admit that I did hook up the Panasonic first and was blown away by the improvement over my old player. I was upgrading from a 3 year old Sony with S-Video connection to a New Progressive Scan player with Component Connection, so the difference there was amazing. It was so good that I was really considering juts sticking with the Panasonic, but the remote and on screen menus really started bugging me after a week, and I decided to try the JVC, knowing it wa risk free and either could eb returned.
Bottom line, they're both going to make almost anyone happy, so enjoy.

One other thing to consider. With the price of DVD+RW drives coming down (I just bought one for $247 after rebate with free shipping) along with DVD+RW disks, you may want a player that is compatible:

The Panasonic is, the JVC is not. FYI.

1. You will not know what disc a certain number has until the menu of the DVD comes up. That takes almost 1-min. If you are the only one loading and unloading the DVD it may be a nice one to buy.
2. There is no Disc Skip button. You have to press two button to select a disc.
3. It makes too much noise while skipping the disc.
If you really need a disc changer it may be good idea to look for one of those huge ones with 300+ as they have disc explorers that allow you to title the discs. You can browse through that list and then select the one you like instead of trying to wait for the menu to pop to find what disc it is.
Kenwood Soverieg M5050 or something like that number is available at Crutchfield for 799.

I need an MP3 changer though, with DVD, I have the JVC 3 disc and it is loud as all hell. I dont want JVC, but they are the only company with a DVD MP3 changer. I am trying to get rid of my CD, MP3 and DVD players and get one that does all...thats the purpose of needing at least 7 discs, although 300 would be nice
