This shipping is kicking my ass man. Ive been wanting to make orders for months but there havn't been any good free shipping codes on box sets or orders over $50 . I would be placing orders and spending around $300 if We got some B1G1 + free shipping codes (that apply to box sets as well. Still having a $49.xx order and $22+ S+H is pretty crappy so I'll still have to wait and hope for some free shipping.
Wish in one hand.....

The last ones I have records of were March and July, when they were for FS for orders over $50 and $75. The last basic box set FS code may have been last December. With the holiday season fast approaching, maybe we can hope for one soon. I am also sitting on an account that's waiting to be fulfilled using one of those codes.

I'm new to CH and wanted to know if I have to fulfill my account with them before any of these codes work. I think I've tried just about every one of these and they keep coming up not valid on my account. Can anyone help? Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome to the forum, Thursday9!

The codes do work on an unfulfilled account. In fact, you'll find it's to your benefit to use a code to fulfill an account. It's possible that you're not entering the code in the right spot. Check out this thread for some help. If you still need help or have questions, you may want to check out the "Questions" thread and post a message there.

I know it's been awhile for me, but when did CH only give codes out that worked on unfulfilled accounts?

I used to use any code, like b1g1 with FS all the time on a fulfilled account.

Since the site re-design a couple months ago, code behavior seems to have been unreliable. I have never had any problem entering any code (that I tried, which admittedly isn't many) on fulfilled or unfulfilled accounts. The fact that many people aren't following the directions on how to enter the codes on the new site, and the fact that cookies often seem to interfere with things makes me think that many of the reports of codes not working are just mistakes by users.

However, there do seem to be a few reliable reports of some codes not working on some accounts, so it's certainly a possibility for the future. I could be wrong, but I don't think anything has been concretely established as an "only working on a fulfilled account."

What is the best code for an unfulfilled account, with only 1 DVD needed to fulfill?

The B1G1 with free shipping is the best way to fulfill an account, but it's been a little while since the last one. If you need to fulfill right away the previous post to yours is you best bet to figure out which code is best to fulfill with.

Yah, I'd love a B1G1fs. I meant out of the ones in post #1308, I was hoping somebody already crunched the numbers for different quantities. ie. B1G1 vs. B1 +60% (buying X)....

I wouldn't think that any of the other current codes would be better than B1G1F. I suppose that if you purchased an expensive box set (>$48) a 10% off the order code could be better, but one wouldn't likely purchase an expensive box set with just one fulfillment needed on the account.

Most of us not in a hurry would just wait for a B1G1F plus free shipping offer to appear and nab two "not available for enrollment" discs for the one fulfillment.

Well, I haven't crunched any numbers, but I am willing to bet that a buy 1 get 1 at 100% off will trump a buy 1 get 1 at 60% off any day.

actually thats wrong. say you buy 20 $19.99 movies:

$19.99 x 10 = $199.90@ b1g1f

$19.99 X1 + $8.00 x 19 = $171.99@ buy1+60% off

whenever i order movies from columbia house i buy at least 20 at a time and most aren't $19.99. i use all the funcash from those orders to get the expensive ones for $1.99 with shipping. but i will never buy anything unless it is free shipping cause that would add at least $40 to each order. i have over 900 DVD's and 50 TV show sets and most of those came from their warehouse. the only good b1g1 free sales i see are for blu-ray but they don't have a big selection to choose from.

CDGray - That's still $8.60/disc which is a really high price to pay for $19.99 discs at CH. With a little effort (more these days than in the past) you can cycle accounts and get the discs for a little over $5 each. Most people here wouldn't place a 20 discs order since it's cheaper to cycle.

The other issue is that in the B1G1 example the order counts as 10 fulfillments (not that you ever need that many) and the B1+60% example counts as 1 fulfillment.

And financially, a fulfillment credit by itself (no DVD) can be worth about $10.

In a 7:2 account:
$2.94+$9.95 for 7 DVDs with 2 left to buy:
Optimized account: $4.80 each using B1G1+FS codes to fulfill.
(7x$4.80-$2.94-$9.95)/2=$10.36.
In other words, if you could just send CH $10.36x2, without getting any more DVDs, to fulfill the account, your average cost would be the same as if you fulfilled using B1G1+FS codes.

In a 6:3 account:
(6*$4.80-$2.94)/3=$8.62

Whenever deciding if something is a good deal, if you are using it as a fulfillment, subtract $10.36 from its cost if you're using a 7:2 account, or $8.62 if you're using a 6:3 account, since there is a real value to a fulfillment credit.

When buying things for $19.95 or over without using them as fulfillments, you are essentially throwing money away. If the total of that money exceeds the personal value you put on your time and energy for cycling, then you come out ahead. If not, you lose.

In addition, as I have tried to point out repeatedly, FC is essentially worthless. $20 in FC is saving you $1.81 in real money (slightly more when your FC order has more than one title at a time). Factor in the opportunity cost of lost FC by actually using it instead of generating more with your purchase, and its value goes down even further.

The absolute best deal in the long run is B1G1+FS codes used to fulfill accounts, and then cycling.

If you prefer to get 3(or more)-disc box sets, you can save a little more by using a box set FS code, instead, if/when one rolls around.

And if your box sets are more expensive (over $53.27), a 15%-off entire order code beats a box set free shipping code. But if you're going as high as $53.27, go for a $59.95+ box set, as it will count as 3 fulfillments--and as I said, that has a value of 3x$8.62 in a 6:3 account, instead of 2x$8.62 if the price is below $59.95 and only counts as 2 fulfillments. If the rare 20%-off order code comes around, it's lowers the cut-off to $39.95-and-above box sets as a preferable code for optimal savings.

60%-off codes only beat a cycled account average when buying $9.95-or-below titles. Buying $12.95 or $14.95 titles, etc., even at 60%-off, never beats a cycled account average, even when factoring in FC.

To explain:
If you, instead of using a B1G1, use a B1G60%, you are giving up a free DVD and are only using the B1 as a trigger to enable the 60%-off. As a result, you are sacrificing $4.80 in value to the discount code. So, even though you can get those $12.95 titles for $5.18 each, you have added $4.80 to the cost of--at best--19 of them, making them $5.43 each. Finally, factoring in the almost-worthless FC (on an unfulfilled account, FC$1 ea., worth, let's say, 13 cents in real money), that brings it back down to roughly $5.30. That means you're paying more for your $12.95 titles per DVD than you are for your $19.95 titles (boy, you'd almost think CH planned this--wait, I guess they probably did...). You lose *far* more money if you're buying $14.95 titles--or ridiculously, $19.95 ones.

I'm not going to go *much* further into the math, but I think you can see that if you DON'T use the B1 part of a B1G60% to *fulfill*, you are losing $19.95(the cost of the DVD)-$4.80(the value of the DVD)=$15.15 to your order, raising the average cost per DVD by 80 cents each (as it is spread over 19 DVDs), and the only benefit you get is some extra almost-worthless FC.

If you do the math of getting a 7:2 account, and fulfilling using B1G60%+FS codes on all 7.95 titles, the average DVD cost is $3.65 each for 49 DVDs, including the 2 purchased with the FC$40 you earned from buying 2 regular DVDs and 38 $7.95 DVDs.

With all 38 as $9.95 titles, the average is $4.27 each.

With all 38 as $12.95 titles, the average is $5.20 each.

If you get all 38 as $19.95 titles, the average for 49 DVDs is $7.37 each.
If you cycle a 7:2 account, you can get 11 for $4.80 each. The extra 38 DVDs must bear the additional overhead of 49*($7.37-4.80)=$126.

That means the cost of not cycling is about $126 *extra* for 38 DVDs. If your time and energy is worth more than that, don't cycle.

OK. That took a lot longer to figure out than I had planned. I gotta stop doing this. Obsessive behavior--oince I start thinking about the math behind this stuff, I can't stop.

^^^Cheato... you should start a "How to maximize your account" type thread with your cost breakout post and request it be a sticky. Of course people actually have to read it for it to be worth the trouble... ...but it would save you some of the time of doing this post every couple of months plus give you an easy post to find, update, and link to!

I used to do this for myself all the time until you started your dissertations, now I don't have to!

I was wondering if anybody has actually FULFILLED an account with B1G1+FS since the changeover. I am hesitant to open a new account if this is a thing of the past!
