Kino & AIP/MGM

Weird; Kino is reissuing OOP AIP b pics at high prices. Not the label they used to be....... (I believe X Ray Eyes was on one of the $3 MGM 2fers at Big Lots?)

X - The Man With The X-Ray Eyes was only released as a single and never got a 2fer release. Still... it may have been at BL but if it were I didn't pay attention as I'd already owned that one.

I'm wondering if they used a new master or if these are simpy repressings of what MGM already released under the MM banner.

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

I bought the Midnite Movie version back in the day (a.k.a. Big Lots).

Didn't do it for me, felt generic. *shrugs*

I would rather see a SE for "Master Of The World" (for DVD as well).

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

Funny, I was just looking for Master Of The World. It recently came out as a Mod. I found a cheap PAL copy (unfortunately with hard burned Dutch subs). Surprisingly decent film for AIP. I'm reading a book about AIP at the moment. I knew they were responsible for most of Price & Karloff's later work & of course for Roger Corman; but what took me by surprise is they also owned much of Mario Bava's work including Black Sabbath.

I first saw X - The Man With The X-Ray Eyes on a "Horror Host" program when a kid and kept waiting to see "nekkid" people (on TV... in the mid 60s... what was I thinking!?!?!?) and liked it well enough anyway when that didn't happen. But it's a Corman film and I've always had a affinity for his earlier work.

Ditto. I was highly disappointed when this one came out as a MOD title.

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

From what I can tell, the Midnite Movies "Tales of Terror" also carried a $19.95 MSRP, while "X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes" was $14.95. Kino's are new transfers with new extras, and I suppose the prices reflects their niche market and the world we live in vs. the world of 2000/2001. The price will come down, and the bigger news is that both are also now available on Blu-Ray.

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

TALES & X also contain newly recorded audio commentaries by Tim Lucas, among other new extras.

I think X is one of Corman's best films and much more serious & intelligent than it's given credit for. Heck, even Ray Milland said this was one of the films in his career he was most proud of (according to Corman's old DVD commentary).

I like tales, though I don't feel a need to replace my MGM.

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

Got a new add today. Whoever thought any Corman film would have a $30 list price..........

Well...

It did.

But damn impossible to find.

At one point MGM Home Entertainment offered a box set of various "Midnite Movies"; mail order offer. In that box set was an exclusive release - "Master Of The World", the only official DVD. I've been looking for that for years.

Screw the box.

I just want that title.

One of these days (I hope), I'll find it in a pawn shop or swap meet.

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

For anybody who hasn't bitten on Master of the World and has region-free capabilities, it's now available from various other European countries, including the UK:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Master-World.../dp/B00IZCPWX0
http://www.amazon.de/Robur-sieben-Ko.../dp/B007O5K3MY
http://www.amazon.it/Padrone-Del-Mon.../dp/B005Z9DTA4

They all seem to have similar picture quality (the German release likely has the best set of extras) and no forced subs, but the bare bones UK version would be a no-brainer.

Any clue how the print compares to the MOD?

Re: Kino & AIP/MGM

They were all released after the R1 MOD, so I expect they all come from that lineage. If you browse/translate the reviews, comments about the video quality are all positive. IIRC, the only version that garnered complaints is an older, Spanish version with a cropped picture.
