Best Buy $5 Off Blu-Ray Coupon / Replace Old DVDs Question

I've recently double dipped on several blu-ray titles thanks to promotions such as Best Buy's current $5 off offer. When trying to decide to keep the old DVD copy I've tried to compare special features and have found that many Blu's don't carry over all of the extras that were on the original DVD release. Is there a list somewhere I can use to decide whether or not the old DVD is worth holding on to? Any help would be appreciated!
For example, here are a couple titles I now own both on DVD and Blu-Ray:
Aliens
Austin Powers
Austin Powers 2
Blow
Cape Fear
Casino
Departed
Die Hard
Die Hard 2
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Ghostbusters
Goodfellas
Heat
Kick-Ass
Memento
Moon
Predator
Pulp Fiction
Sarah Marshall
Silence of the Lambs
Snatch
Superbad
Terminator
Terminator 2

Well, that list was depressing. Several years ago I sold off 90-95% of my DVD collection. Have been upgrading many of the DVDs to Blu-ray, and flat-out re-buying titles that I come across at the flea market or wherever. Some of the discs I got rid of are now OoP, and going for good money. I'm still trying to sort out why I did this (I think I thought if I watched them one last time, I wouldn't care anymore, and what I didn't, I could rent from Netflix), but I (practically) gave away many movies I gave 4 and 5 stars to. Now I regret it a little more, because I'm not buying both.

Re: Best Buy $5 Off Blu-Ray Coupon / Replace Old DVDs Question

Wow, I never knew there was a thread called "Definitive List of Blu-Rays without all SD extras". I would've loved to see it long ago. Whenever a BD deal comes up and I already own the DVD (which is quite often), I have to go to DVD-Basen and read a few reviews (Hi-Def DVD Digest is typically the best in comparing extras) to try to compare the extras by hand, and it becomes painful and time consuming that sometimes I've just said "forget it". It depends on the title and the price. I've been making my own notes on missing extras for a couple years now, but I don't go into much detail... basically whether it has the same extras, missing a few/some/many, has a few/some/many more extras.

I could probably contribute a bunch of info to that list, but I'm so swamped with other stuff I don't know when I'd get around to it. I usually aim to spend 15 minutes a day on DVD Talk (sometimes I go much higher if I'm ranting). In some cases, I'll accept some dropped extras (like games or photo galleries), but it really depends.

I used to open DVDs when I bought them, but I learned not to open anything until I watch it because if you upgrade you can sometimes get rid of the sealed DVD for more (such as Amazon trade-ins). Since money is a little tighter right now, I haven't been doing much in the way of DVD to BD upgrades, even when they're only $5. I have to keep reminding myself that while BD is a lot better, upscaled DVDs aren't that bad either. I lived with them for many years. And when the next higher resolution format comes out, I'm going to have to resist another round of upgrades. Too bad we weren't all rich with unlimited storage and we could just buy 1 of everything on every format and keep it.

Agree completely, Manzana. You have to do your homework before you rid yourself of a standard DVD in favor of the Blu.

And Walletboyniac, I can sympathize with you though not on as grand of a scale. A few years ago I wound up selling a lot of my silent film on DVD collection and Criterion collection because I felt I had gotten my fill of them and probably wouldn't watch them again. I'm now sorry I did that as many of the silents will most likely never come out in Blu, nor do I necessarily need to see them in Blu. And even if all of the missing Criterions make it to Blu, upgrading everything I sold would cost me more than I can spend at this point. And the truth of it is, there are several titles in the batches I sold that I would like to see again. Tastes change and evolve and one year a movie you didn't like can be reappraised as a favorite the following year.

And as I've discovered, FS classics are Window Boxed on Blu. NO THANKS, at least until I have a significant amount of $'s for a new TV.

I'm pretty sure I posted this somewhere pn the forum, but the African Queen Blu also has a protection that disables the 1.2 zoom my player uses to get around window boxing (sigh).

Re: Best Buy $5 Off Blu-Ray Coupon / Replace Old DVDs Question

I'm just at the beginning of a Blu Ray collection (having got the player and flat screen late last year). But my plan is to hang on to the DVDs of the films I enjoy; even as I buy Blu Ray versions. I want the flexibility of being able to play these special films on a DVD machine or my Mac. I'll sell them, though, if the Blu Ray comes with a DVD as well. Anyway, selling DVDs doesn't garner much, so I might as well keep them. Re. the best buy deal, I just trade in DVDs I have no interest in keeping--suddenly worth $5 apiece. BB doesn't require straight trades.

Many of the OOP titles are going for good money these days. Also remember what one rents from Netflix today may not necessarily be there tomorrow especially with their streaming service as rights expire and do not get renewed. Works that way with any tethered viewing service I suppose.

Re: Best Buy $5 Off Blu-Ray Coupon / Replace Old DVDs Question

As far as physical discs go, i think Netflix running out of a title is more about damaged dvd's & them choosing not to purchase more (my take is they will be streaming only at some point).
