I think I've had it with ordering anything directly from VCI. It's true that I have defended them in this thread and made excuses for their mistakes, but the time has come for me to face the fact that while I still like a lot of their product, their recent business practices leave a lot to be desired.

First they did away with their typical 40% off sales and membership sign up bonus that quite often yielded very good bargains. Next they redesigned their web site to make it even more user unfriendly and glitch filled than their last site, most of the time entailing having to call to complete an order. Finally, they now claim holiday "sales" that are not sales at all. Case in point: The most recent one that I posted above with 35% off their suggested retail price, not their web prices. How did that translate? The prices after the 35% off retail were no different than their everyday web prices! So why on earth would you buy something during the alleged sale period when you could buy it for the same price at anytime during the year? In other words, a sale that meant nothing and saved nothing.

I wish them well in their endeavors, but any future VCI product I invest in will come from secondary sellers and not them. They have worn out their welcome with me.

Sorry to hear that Glenn. I'm so broke haven't been paying attention lately; though I still would like to pick up some of their Noir boxes (I'm a Raft fan).

I have noticed a lot of blow out pricing on Roans on lately on ebay from the Super D Evil Empire (DD, Import cd's, etc); but I wonder if they're factory pressed or the mods?

Geff, please post or E mail me some of the best Roan deals on Ebay (at least the titles) as there are still some I am looking for. Though I prefer pressed DVDs, of course, I guess if the price is low enough I don't mind if they are DVD-Rs, but the price has to be pretty low.

I highly recommend all the VCI NOIR, "Forgotten" and "Hammer" sets. They are great. My issue with them certainly isn't with the product they release, but with their web site and their new policies on sales which aren't sales at all.

Oldies has been having a sale on individual Alpha titles for $3.99 each...although by now, that's probably not news.

I also wanted to mention that (after receiving a DVD-R described on their web site as a real DVD) an Oldies employee confirmed that you can tell one from the other based on the existence of a security sticker across the top (i.e. their DVD-R's lack the sticker). For me, this is a boon for buying new Alpha titles from EBay and Amazon Marketplace, since I now know what's inside the sealed package. It's a pity that VCI and Image were never so forthcoming/organized.

Oldies still had some of the pressed version in stock and are sending me a copy free of charge. Kudos to their customer service!

FYI, their DVD-R's contain the same "silk screened" artwork as the originals, unlike the generic label sides put out by the big studios. I don't know what technology they use, but am very surprised they can do it all in house.

VCI actually came clean recently, but you still have to check their web site. AFAIK individual movies are not marked "DVD-R", but you can at least learn which titles to be careful about. The same also applies to Image. Amazon burns all of Image's DVD-R's, so checking Amazon's listing reveals what's what. Security stickers or lack thereof may also be a giveaway, but I don't think anybody's so far determined this as a hard rule.

An incomplete list of Roan DVD-R's are at http://www.cavd.com/roan-group.php . Add D.O.A., Chamber of Horrors, and probably a few more to the list. These are also not universally marked on the cases, but lack of a security sticker is likely cause for worry.

FYI: There is another Roan dump going on right now. I have not been able to find out if they are factory pressed or burned. I asked the wholesaler, & explained about the sticker & his response was he didn't know. So it may be drop shipping. There also is a much larger Troma dump going on (pretty much the entire catalog; but I am not a fan, so I'm not paying much attention.
