Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

Having read the Best Buy, Target, and WalMart ads, I'm pretty disappointed with the TV on DVD sales. TV on DVD sets that were around $10 last year (or less) appear to be $13 now. It also seems like stores are holding back from putting more recent seasons on sale too, when last year I even got the latest release as cheap as the other seasons. A lot of the DVD sets I'm interested in have been $14 or lower over the course of the year, and now they're maybe only $13 for Black Friday. I guess I'll keep waiting or hope there are some good unadvertised prices.

Considering DVD is on a decline as a medium, its also unfortunate to see some of the movie titles listed in the various price categories above $5.

Obviously retailers are worried about profits and they certainly don't owe us consumers any deals, but it's still disappointing. It looks like Best Buy has the better prices on TV on DVD, and Wal-Mart has the better prices for movie DVDs, so far. And seeing how timid Amazon was last year, at this point I'm not even expecting them to price match or even beat these B&M retailers price wise.

Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

I hope we will see smaller retailers represented in this thread as well and I will do my part should advance word come my way. Last year my best deals came from sales at VCI and the WB SHOP.

Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

So far these Black Friday deals on DVDs are pretty lame, I already have the DVDs I want from those lists and I didn't pay very much for them when I bought them (I never do). I'm hoping these lists expand as we get closer to Black Friday, I'd like to see a good price on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. $13.99 isn't good enough for me. -kd5-

My experience with last year's Black Friday sales was mixed. I found that the after Chrsitmas sales between the 26th to 30th December were much better than the so called Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale prices and offers. Lower prices and better, wider selection of titles too!

Be aware that I've been in Target stores many times on Black Friday and a remarkable number of their dvd specials have been FS only, with the WS versions significantly more expensive..

Cool! Looks like Best Buy takes the prize for offering this for the best price (without waiting an eternity for it to make its rounds). Thanks! Can't believe I didn't see that when I looked at that ad yesterday. -kd5-

Target will be opening at midnight. Some of its employees are really pissed about this and are complaining openly:

Target Employees Fight Back Against Store's Plan To Open Thanksgiving Night
By Chris Morran on November 14, 2011 12:15 PM

(Lovingier Photography)

Because people simply can not wait until after they've digested their turkey to cash in on deep discounts, many of the major retail chains are opening earlier than usual on Black Friday this year. This is not sitting well with thousands of Target employees who have signed a petition for the store to at least let them finish their pumpkin pie before having to report to work.

As of now, more than 9,000 people have signed this petition asking Target HQ to wait until 5 a.m. on Black Friday to open the stores.

Reads the petition:

A midnight opening robs the hourly and in-store salary workers of time off with their families on Thanksgiving Day. By opening the doors at midnight, Target is requiring team members to be in the store by 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. A full holiday with family is not just for the elite of this nation — all Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones and get a good night's rest on Thanksgiving!

"All Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones on Thanksgiving," the creator of the petition, a Target employee in Nebraska, tells CBS. "With the midnight opening, employees like myself will have to leave for work right in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner. We don't mind hard work, but cutting into our holidays is a step too far... If Target doesn't reverse its decision and allow associates to spend Thanksgiving holidays with their family, they might suffer from a fast-growing consumer backlash."

A manager of a Michigan Target tell CBS Detroit, "We're trying to stay ahead of the curve... I don't like the fact I have to come in on Thanskgiving, but when you work in retail it's the nature of the beast."

These stores must have boxes of unsold Weeds seasons. Every Black Friday, it's the main tv season on sale in all the stores.

Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

First, thanks to those who put the lists together. But wow, for my needs I see very damned little. No TV boxes, a handful of films. Obviously, while the retailers are being aggressive in terms of opening hours, they're not offering very compelling product. I'm seriously reconsidering my midnight run to Wally Mart and El Targay.

Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

Hopefully there will be a Blu-Ray Black Friday list soon to save me from squinting at the ad scans and writing up a list. The problem is that DVDs aren't very interesting to me any more with BD, so I'd have a tough time paying more than $3 for any DVD.

Regarding Doc Moonlight's post above, it says the article says the reason BF was moved up to midnight is "because people simply can not wait". Oh really? Maybe I'm in the minority view here, but I definitely wish BF would never start before 5 AM to allow people to sleep and spend an uninterrupted Thanksgiving with their families. I assumed the reason BF was moved up to midnight is "because RETAILERS simply can not wait".

That's right, and every year I pass on it regardless of the price (I think it's usually $8.99 per season). I haven't ever seen the series, so maybe it's good.

That's weird. I've never seen that happen at any I've gone to.

Part of it might be that they're throwing it back in the vault at the end of the year.
