@WTK - Are the blu-ray release by Funimation actual blu-ray transfer or upscale of the regular DVD release?

Samurai 7
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Gunslinger Girl: Season II
Dragon Ball Z Kai: Season I Part

I had heard the DBZ movies are not so great and are obvious upscales. The best i can throw in is that all the sets are on dual layer BD's, so 50 gig disks would merit around the proper amount of space needed for proper hd.

In additional to what wormraper said...

Tsubasa S1 is upscale. S2 is said to be either and not officially confirmed.
  • Tsubasa, RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Collected Memories Collection (Seasons 1-2 + Movie) (Blu-ray)

The naughty list (for some to many)...the worst is probably CLAMP Double Feature.
  • CLAMP Double Feature: Tsubasa Chronicles & xxxHOLiC (Blu-ray)
  • Claymore: Complete Collection (Blu-ray)
  • Trinity Blood: Complete Collection (Blu-ray)
  • Witchblade: Complete Collection (Blu-ray)

??? - These ones I'm not sure.
  • Devil May Cry: Complete Collection (Blu-ray)
  • Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn / Wath of the Dragon (Double Feature) (Blu-ray)

The upscales starting with Ouran have gotten better. It seems they getting through that bad batch of upscales from late '09 to early '10.

P.S.: The Vexille BD release that was supposedly on sale is actually just the DVD SE version. BestBuy.com messed that one up.

Went up to BB to see if I could get a price match for Dragon Box 2 & 3 and was accepted but it rung up $22.99. I'm glad I waited and didn't have a chance to jump on Amazon's deal!

Tsubasa season 2 is native HD.

Devil May Cry is native HD too. I think all of the DBZ movies are HD as I've never heard anything about them being upscaled.

I figured that's the case for Tsubasa S2 (DMC to a certain extent). Thanks for the confirmation.

Re: Official - ANIME Bargains! - Thread [updated daily...or close to it] - July '10

i was really hoping for Samurai 7 blu and Strike Witches to be pm'd. SW is close with including BB's shipping + tax, but S7 is a lost cause.

still plenty of good deals deals going at Amazon though.

I'd go for the blu-ray. It's cheaper, has better picture quality and has the same extras minus the fancy packaging and booklet.

All the DBZ Blu-ray movies are native HD not upscales. But they were made from the mediocre condition masters Funimation originally received from the Japanese years ago. The audio is possibly the best there ever will be. But it is my understanding that the last Dragon Box is supposed to contain all the movies in pristine (albeit SD) condition. There are in such good condition, they may look better than the Blu-rays. I personally have 3 of the Blu-rays and like them just fine.
