Maybe people should just stop bitching. This isn't about having something to say, this is about posting to complain. We live in a world full of complainers. People are never happy with what they get. And many people here are just tired of reading the same posts every time the sale comes up. Is it too hard to understand? And who are you to judge my age?

Welcome to the Internet is more like it... This place isn't unique in this regard. People get defensive (and offensive) for no personal, invested reason.

As far as the other commentary on this sale and DDD's practices:

If someone perceives there's shenanigans going on and can justify it to themselves to skip the sale entirely, who cares?

If someone finds a good deal or two to be had through this sale, who cares?

If someone only buys DVDs through this (or any other) sale, regardless of the micro-management required to get the best deal on every title, who cares?

Yes, I have to go with the times we live in...............................

(Again, I just think that threads in the bargain section should be about the bargains you can find at those sales. That's all and if there are no bargains to find so be it.)

Everyone, please try to keep the criticism at a minimum. We really don't want to have to close this thread or suspend people before the sale even starts, but we really have no problem giving a nice little timeout to those who need it.

Not necessarily. Like many others here I picked up some recently released Bond Blu-ray Discs for $4.99 each last November from Amazon, in addition to a number of other BD titles for $7 to $10. Such deals do happen. I am curious to see if there will be any similar deals this coming November. I am willing to be patient and don't consider it to "be waiting a long time", although perhaps you do.

In addition, MSRP and wholesale prices for DVDs and BDs tend to drop over time. For the thrifty, waiting has its advantages. I don't get the "gotta have it NOW" mentality that so many seem to have but would guess that it is much appreciated by the studios.

How do you know those examples were below cost? I would assume that Amazon made some small margin of profit on those titles or at least broke even. My guess is that those prices were do to the studio providing incentives to Amazon that allowed them to sell them for cheaper, thus lowering Amazon's cost (i.e., not below cost).

I really really hope Dane was joking.. But in any case.. (DEAD) DeepDiscount Official Notice: 25% Off from 7/17 Through 8/2, 2009 summed it up nicely.

Does this sort of practice occur in businesses throughout the world, including grocery and furniture stores? Yes.

Are people aware of this? Apparently not.

OTOH, if the price has been at a certain level for 6 months, and then suddenly increases during the sale, and then drops back again after the sale, then you have justification.

Don't be so sure. Sweeping claims without evidence just make people look foolish. Others have tried. All have failed. Has DD raised prices right before a sale and then dropped them again right after, in order to lessen or negate the discount? Definitely. Has it been across the board or on a large scale? Absolutely not. These are isolated incidents.
They are far from isolated examples, but you asked only for SOME examples rather than an exhaustive list. I had more than 20 blu-rays in my cart on June 21st and the price went up for all of them (although 25% off the current price would make most of them slightly cheaper than they were in June).

In terms of consistency, Truman Show has been consistently priced at under $15 on both DD and Amazon (and even Target sells it for $14.99). I got it for $12.99, so I am not really complaining about this or any particular disc. All I was saying is that DD have increased their prices, in some cases dramatically, before releasing the coupons. You asked for examples and I provided some. There is a way to find out how extensive and substantial this price increase is, but I will let you discover it. Unfortunately, DD’s deals are nowhere close to what DDD’s deals used to be.

For the folks that feel that a slap is a nice welcome, you are not helping anybody in the long run. I have been on this forum and other DVD-related forums before you knew what a DVD is, when Reel was the most discussed place on these forums and CDNow the most popular Web site. Like many others, I gave up on posting long time ago.

Wow, the price for BSG (Blu-Ray) continues to go down. It's currently: $219.89. As long as it doesn't skyrocket up on 07/17 I'll be happy.

So your statement is incorrect in this instance. They will match any online retailer's total price PERIOD.
There is a big difference between agreeing to match another retailer's (however obscure) price and pricing it that low to begin with. Most customers don't meticulously comparison price check, expecially on lesser known items, so DD or any retailer will still sell merchandise even if someone somewhere has a lower price that they have to match occasionally. Any retailer who attempts to be aggressively proactive about finding every competitor's sale price and meeting or beating it won't be in business very long.

They do in general terms try to keep their pricing consistent with their major known competitors. No one is perfect at it, and for various reasons they don't try to be.

Actually, that makes it a brilliant idea to mention the titles here. This would help to either bust or confirm the myth that they're jacking up the prices before the sale.

My wishlist for now:

Duckman - Seasons 3&4 $31.89
Watchmen [Blu-ray] $25.87
Dollhouse - Season 1 [Blu-ray] $48.89
John Adams [Blu-ray] $46.39
Dexter - Season 2 [Blu-ray] $38.89
Sarah Connor Chronicles - Season 1 [Blu-ray] $26.87

I also wanted Season 4 of Weeds, but the Blu-ray is region locked, so I can't play it on my player. I probably won't get Dollhouse or John Adams either, as the price has to be below $30 before shipping to avoid import taxes, which means the price needs to drop below $40 before the discount, and I don't think that's realistic.

I fully expect it to go back up.
It would be nice if it doesn't, but I think it will since Amazon is at a similar price point. I don't think DD can best an already aggressive discount by 25%.

OTOH, this is a high msrp title and what should be a popular one. They may be able to move enough of these in volume to make up for a huge discount compared to the nickel and dime margins on many other discs.

well see.

Re: DeepDiscount Official Notice: 25% Off Sale Runs From July 17 Through August 2, 20

I think the main frustration with the erratic pricing is that (generally speaking) over time, prices decrease.

For catalog titles that have been out for a while, it's very frustrating to see a reasonable price go up for no apparent reason. I like Amazon, but their genius programmers with their pricing algorithms can drive you batty.

With DD, many of us have a long-standing affinity with this company going back a number of years. When we notice prices going up with no corresponding end to a promotion or a sale, it's cause for head-scratching, and possibly directing our money for that coveted triple-dip elsewhere.

Uh so its more important to prove that they raise prices before the sale than to get a bargain? To each his own. I'd rather get a bargain.
