Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Saw a new shipment of 2.00 titles today. Some were restocks from older shipments and some I had never seen before. I got these:

Doctor Detroit
Dr. T and the women
Grizzly man (Herzog)
Tommyknockers mini series
Swimming with Sharks 10th Anniversary
Van Wilder 2 disc
Employee of the month (Matt Dillon)

There were others but they were mostly full screen like Kickboxer 3 and 4.

I also picked up these:

Boris Karloff Icons of Horror collection (15.00)
Football collection (Rudy, Radio, Jerry Maguire) (11.00)
I know what you did last summer/I still know (8.00)
Money Train/Anaconda 2 pack (8.00)

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

I went into 1 of 2 BLs I routinely check and found some scattered anime titles I hadn't seen before ( previous stuff was more kiddy/schoolgirl titles). My daughter's is into the genre. There were misc. volumes of 6 or 7 titles, most not anywhere near complete; But I found 1 copy each of all 4 volumes of "Flag" which was a well reviewed series aimed at adults. .. and both vols of something call Zegapain ( not so well reviewed :-) )

The Sterling location got a new shipment in the last week. Much of what has been mentioned lately, although only one copy of each in many cases, at least as of yesterday.

There are 3 different versions of Legionaire floating around. I have all 3 and it is a very mixed bag.

1st version) This was the first version released many years ago. It is 2.35 non-anamorphic and contains only Legionaire.

2nd version) This was the second version released and has a new upc label on the case underneath the shrink wrap. The upc number is 65814971452650. The specs on the back of the case says 2.35 aspect ratio, but it is full screen instead. In addition, all the special features such as audio commentary, etc are NOT contained on the disk. This disk is Legionaire only.

3rd version) This is the 3rd version and contains both Legionaire and Replicant on one disk. Legionaire is 1.78 anamorphic, but there is a catch.

Lionsgate took the fullscreen version from the 2nd version above and trimmed off the top and bottom to get to the 1.78 aspect ratio. The framming obviously looks tight. First, Lionsgate hacked off the left and right side for the fullscreen version and then chopped off the top and bottom to get the flick into a 1.78 ratio.

I don't know about Replicant, because I don't have anything to compare it to.

Personally, I like the 1st version. It is non-anamorphic, but at least you get ALL of the picture in a 2.35 aspect ratio.

Hope this helps...

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

IMDB shows the correct OAR as being 2.35. I got the 1st and 3rd version. This has to be the most screwed up dvd yet.

At BL, I found the Sterling one that says widescreen with a new UPC sticker inside the wrapper. I also found the Sterling one that said Full screen with a new UPC sticker inside the wrapper. And the Red Carpet one with two movies.

Ever since the acquisitions of all these small studios, which looked like a promising future for all the films in the library, Lionsgate has done nothing but upset its consumers, here is a documented list of these mishaps:

These are the reasons why I am really not happy with Lionsgate:

04/11/06
Red Carpet Double Feature: Legionnaire / Replicant, re-issuing Legionnaire with the incorrect OAR of 1.78:1 dropping the previous 2.35:1 OAR released by Studio Home Entertainment and all the features: Audio Commentary
Trailers,Interviews with Cast and Crew & Rare Footage with Legionnaires in Combat.
Which one which. We'll never know. Good thing at Big Lots, they're only $2.00 each.

Went over to my local BL tonight and there seemed to be a lot more of the $6
titles BUt they were all previously previewed . They had Bank Job which I have not seen before.
Not really interested in those so I didn't really take notice of every title.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

It's a great mystery to me why BL would be bothering with purchasing previously viewed DVDs that have a $6 selling price when they're selling new DVDs for $2 and $3. My nearest store's collection of these $6 DVDs is getting larger and from what I can tell none have been sold. You can usually buy PV DVDs at your local rental store for less.

While the info I get isn't always accurate, i was told the store in question was getting over 500 of the $6 titles................. I agree, it doesn't make sense.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

^The Derry store had tons of previewed dvds yesterday, saw Rambo and some other newer stuff, but yeah it's too much. Who buys these scratched up dvds for $6? I can't even sell my mint copies for the same price or less (well, dvdtalker's are much more frugal than BL shoppers anyway).

I also saw another new Sony title which I have not seen mentioned before, and even worse it's fullscreen only:
Spider's Web (Stephen Baldwin, Kari Wuhrer) Fullscreen
...
and some new anime from Bandai:
Flag (Vol.1)
Flag (Vol.2)
