Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Been to 4 different Big Lots over the last week and all the new stock is being placed on the wire racks(Dayton,Oh area). A worker at one store told me they got in a HUGE shipment of DVD's but confirmed they are only putting out enough quantity to keep the wire racks full. So that's why one day no King Kong two-pack but then on the shelf the next day/week at the same store.
Here is what I got for $3.00 each today-

Decoys (Sci-Fi Horror, anamorphic widesceen. Rated "R" for sexuality and
nudity.)
Decoys the Second Seduction (anamorphic widesceen, ...more nudity)
Truffaut's "Day For Night" (academy award winner best foreign language film)
I'll Be There (Comedy, got it because it has singer Charlotte Church)

Yep, I've been there and done that. Pass on a few titles and decide in the next day or two to go ahead and buy them, only to find a few of the ones you wanted left. Now I just buy everything I think I might want including totally blind buys and take back what I decide I don't want or (in my case and probaly others here as well) that I actually already own. I'm working hard to add more shrink wrapped titles to my collection.

The 8th store was the charm. Finally, all the second newer titles were there. But still no To Sir With Love.

Everyone should run and go buy Eating Raoul. This is a movie that has been discontinued and is absolutely hilarious. An all time favorite movie.

To Sir With Love is rare and out of print according to amazon. Everyone should get a good trade for it if you make a trade..
To Sir With Love goes currently for 30 dollars a copy on amazon marketplace.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

I'm honestly having a really hard time keeping track of all of these movies... someone should compile a checklist of everything...

Also this shipment really does seem to be YMMV... There's a few titles I can't find right now... Although I was able to get The Dark Backward and The City of Lost Children AND To Sir, With Love.

Actually, my store only had two copies of it - and one was a floater. Otherwise I'd be more than willing to trade with anyone who wanted it. I will be going to another local store in a few days, and I'll let you know if they have more copies there.

Yes, the transfer was done by someone who didn't know what they were doing. If you watch this in 16x9, this is what you'll see:

I don't know a whole lot about DVD authoring, but after reading a couple of things, I think this is what happened. The image on DVD is stored in a 720x480 pixel image. If the playback is at 4x3 (640x480), then the image is stretched to fit 720x480. If playback is at 16x9 (853x480), the image is squeezed to fit 720x480. The 720x480 image for Eating Raoul is neither squeezed nor stretched:

... so incongruously it looks perfect when seen that way, although with a 1.5:1 aspect ratio. I cropped this to about 1.75:1, which should be close to the way it was projected:

I don't know if some DVD players will play at a 1.5:1 AR, but if so, this would be the way to watch it.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Just checked the nearest store, and there were a bunch of the previous viewed titles. Nothing new really, I really wanted to find To Sir, With Love.

I did find one thing that I haven't seen mentioned- Prom Night 3/4 Double Feature. I picked it up for $2 hoping it was out of print and could be re-sold but no dice. Not bad for $2 though.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Went to my other Big Lots & they didn't have The City of Lost Children/The Dark Backward.
I guess could live without City of Lost Children but I really want Dark Backward....
If anyone finds an extra & needs something I'll see if it's here....

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

I was at my local Big Lots. Didn't see any of the titles mentioned by others, but I found:

House on Haunted Hill (new version)
The name of the rose (with Sean Connery)
Hormigas en la Boca (ants in the mouth)

I was hoping to find the City of the Lost Children, but I had no luck. I will check my other Big Lots and see what they have

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Went in today and sadly no SOny or Wb restock. They did have the first look and Ventura titles though.
Managed to get
King of California (w/ slipcover)
The Amateurs (w/ slipcover)
The Contract
Everything Put together

Also saw (and not sure if mentioned yet)

The Proposition (Fantastic DVD with amazing special features and some of the best picture quality I have ever seen on a dvd.)
10 items of less (very enjoyable film with great features)
Dave Chappelle: Killin them Softly
The Dead Girl

Please oh please put the new restock of WB and Sony titles out. I am jonesin' so bad for some of those titles.
