Hey neighbor, I live just a few miles from that Costco!

And coincidentally, was planning on going there tonight, and want those sets, so thanks!

I almost left out the location, but recalled seeing that some list it so I decided to add it at the last minute. I never expected it to come in handy for someone local, happy to know it may have helped.

I saw several of the Universal Monster Legacy collections for $10.99 each.

The ones I saw were Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, Creature From The Black Lagoon, and The Mummy. Number of films varies by set from 3( Creature) to 8 (Frankenstein).

I'm assuming these are the newer releases and not the old DVD-18 flipper Legacy sets, correct?

A good deal, but Universal announced they have plans for many of the sequels on Blu Ray. I might still pick up THE INVISIBLE MAN set though and junk my DVD-18 one. I just don't see the INVISIBLE MAN sequels making it onto Blu, but the other "monsters" may stand a good chance.

Thanks for posting this update!

Re: General Costco DVD Thread

I saw the remastered DVDs of the Dick Van Dyke Show Complete Series in new slim package for $99.99.
Its been cheaper elsewhere so not much of a bargain.

However an Amazon Review of the set.

The new DVD set of the Dick Van Dyke Show was a disappointment. I've had the old release (brown box) for years. Probably my favorite sit-com ever. So I decided to upgrade to the new, remastered set. The new release (the regular DVDs, blue & white box, all 5 seasons, released in Nov 2015) is letterboxed. On my television and on my computer there were thick black bands around all four sides of the picture. I was really surprised to see this. The problem's not with my equipment, the discs were encoded this way. My old set is fine (the image fills the screen as intended with the 4:3 picture), but the new set has the boxing issue. The picture on the new set has definitely been cleaned up, but the reduction in size makes it hard to see. I can't understand why they released this classic show this way, especially after advertising it as an improved version.

EDIT: I feel really, really bad about trashing this boxed set. Mine is the only review so far, weeks after the set's release, and I don't like seeing this with a one-star rating. So I'm bumping it to three stars. Let the reader decide if he or she wants letterboxed. But the sit-com was great, and I hate to take away from that. So five stars for the show, one star for the dvd treatment = three stars.

Well, actually, that type of presentation is called "windowboxing," and it's done to preserve the ENTIRE full-frame image. Older TVs (and, to a much lesser extent, HDTVs) are prone to something called overscan, which means that when a 4 x 3 image is shown full screen, there are slivers of the image that are cut off by the edges of the TV tube or display screen. Therefore, distributors will often windowbox an image if there's important information at the edges of the frame, or if they want to make sure that the consumer sees the entire frame.

You'll see this happen quite a bit with older, pre-widescreen Hollywood movies, especially from Universal. The opening titles and credits will be windowboxed so that everything on screen can be read, without anything being cut off by individual displays.

You can read more about it here:

Re: General Costco DVD Thread

The Complete Foyle's War currently is $20 instant off bringing the price down to $79.99. I would assume this set will be removed soon as the holidays are over. I don't think I bought any DVDs or blu rays from Costco this holiday season. Selection was poor and the prices generally high. Only good things I saw were the 20 film Warner Bros sets for $35. I didn't need them but they were a great price.

This set has a $199.99 list price and is currently $105.99 at Amazon so the Costco price is not bad. These Acorn Media sets are always priced high.

This new approach starting to show up on a few newer releases of older 4x3 TV shows is nothing about window-boxing for over-scanning. It is about the fact that most consumers now own 16x9 TV's and disks are now being made to accommodate this fact to preserve the correct aspect ratio when viewing. Basically it is similar to what happens when a 4x3 show is done on blu-ray, bars are added to the sides of the internal 16x9 image to protect the aspect ratio when played back. DVD's are internally 4x3, so what some are starting to do is use 16x9 masters of 4x3 content (with bars on the sides) to create anamorphic DVDs.

The reason for doing this is so viewers can leave their TV's in fullscreen (16x9) mode for all content without having the need to constantly switch the TV viewing mode to match the OAR. it also prevents people from filling theirs screen when viewing 4x3 content since the output is already wide with the embedded bars. This is all unnoticeable when viewing on a 16x9 set.

The problem the viewer above is having is that they are watching on a 4x3 screen. When doing this you have the side bars embedded in the image content on the disk, plus you have the DVD player adding bars to the top and bottom because it is receiving anamorphic content for playback on a 4x3 screen. Thus creating the unintended idea of window-boxing.

Re: General Costco DVD Thread

picked up batman '66 TV seasons 2, season 3 part 1 and season 3 part 2 in Nashua NH at the Costco, for $10.99 each, plus a coupon for up to $8 back on a Batman v. Superman ticket.

DVD, not blu-ray, but net it's pretty cheap.

Did not see it at Costco in Waltham, MA, so YMMV.

Re: General Costco DVD Thread

Not sure if Costco's living in another world or has lost track of pricing. Spotted the following in a SoCal location:

Maltese Falcon - 3 disc SE (http://www.amazon.com/Maltese-Falcon...dp/B000GIXLW0/)
Dr.Zhivago - 2 disc Anniversary edition (http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Zhivago...dp/B002WC88A8/)
Unbearable lightness of Being - 2 disc (http://www.amazon.com/Unbearable-Lig...dp/B000CBG5PG/)

And get this, they want - gulp - $16.99 for each !!!!!!!

Re: General Costco DVD Thread

The Complete Andy Griffith Show $60 I believe this is just the series without reunion move. Only extras listed are original sponsor openings on a couple of seasons.

The Complete Star Trek TOS $50. Currently $10 cheaper at Amazon.
