Don't waste your money...
it's the same transfer as the old disc, and they're getting rid of this to make way for the new hi def double disc set coming out next year. Their rights ran out and the new edition is getting ready to go with Don May again doing the remastering work having fixed the problems with the transfer that's been bothering him for years.

I did a buy, on-line, and selected store pickup. I get to the store and sign the receipt, and look @ it, briefly, before leaving. I get back to work and discover they gave me the 2 disc special addition of the remake. I guess I get to go back up and exchange it. Kinda funny though, because the disc they gave me was marked $29.99. Nobody even batted an eyelash.

I've never seen the black bar. Can you post screen captures, or links?
Would love it if this was getting a new transfer like was rumored for so long.
I don't think it's kosher to link to other forums from here, but suffice to say if you go to "that other" DVD/HT forum you can do a search and find lots of screen shots and a long history of the problems with this transfer and the Pioneer handling of this film in general. For an American classic, it has sure gotten the shaft on DVD.
Trust me, if you have a screen bigger than 36", avoid this like the plague.
