Writer Peter David is in "desperate trouble" with the IRS

Peter David owes a lot of money to the IRS for back taxes and posted the above on his own site. He's hoping his fans will bail him out of this situation with donations.

That's tough. I was going to make fun of him for not paying, but the circumstances sound understandable. I don't really know his work but am tempted to send something anyway.

I'll look into this and probably help when I have more time. He was perhaps my favorite writer at various times during my heyday of reading. His run on Hulk is probably the best 100+ issue run in big two history. Loved his Star Trek and Supergirl as well, and am definitely forgetting some other highlights.

Yeah, I thought the same thing: Just pay your damned taxes, but it wasn't as simple as that. He really got screwed over by his ex.

"Do you want to get something for the money? Fine: Send a check to my PO Box, PO Box 951, Bayport, NY 11705 along with books of mine and a SASE and I’ll sign them and send them back. That’s something, I guess."

He comes off like a dick in this paragraph. If I would send him a book and a SASE, plus $10 to help him out, the least he could do is take 5 seconds to jot his name down on a book.

Is he saying that under duress or is he just downplaying how much his autograph is worth?

Re: Writer Peter David is in "desperate trouble" with the IRS

It doesn't seem like he's managed his money very well over the years because his statement reads like this IRS problem happened many years ago. For some reason he thought the IRS would forget about the back taxes.

It sounds like he's been "kiting" out his taxes, like after his bank account got cleared, he structured payment on that year's taxes while falling behind on the taxes for subsequent years. Which is probably doable as long as you have a steady income, but I'm not sure how much writing PAD is doing these days in either comics or novels, and he also suffered a stroke a while back, too, which probably bit into his earning potential in addition to medical expenses.

Giving this a bit more thought, I hope he doesn't get in more trouble with this fundraising drive. Would the money he collected be considered a gift? If he does manage to collect $88,000 from donations, wouldn't that be taxable income on this year's taxes?

I mean if the choice is pay the IRS or pay a divorce attorney my choice will always be the IRS. You can screw the lawyer but the IRS is never going to go away.

There is no gift tax below the $14,000 threshold per person each year. There is a lifetime gift tax figure but it's in the millions. So receiving small donations isn't a tax problem.

Re: Writer Peter David is in "desperate trouble" with the IRS

Cry me a fucking river. I've never been a fan. He's always come across as arrogant in interviews & he has way too high of an opinion of himself. I always thought his writing was garbage.

Why the fuck should he ask people to bail him out of a financial problem he himself created, when many of us have our own financial issues to deal with?! I have to pay my fucking taxes. Why can't he?

Plus, he obviously had a lot of $ at one point. I've struggled financially over the years, and I have absolutely no sympathy for at-one-time rich people who made bad financial decisions. What goes around, comes around.

This is no better than those entitled millennials who set up "go fund me" pages so they can get money for an expensive wedding, college tuition, etc. What a fucking scam.

Donated $20. I wish him well and hope he can get out from underneath this tax burden. For his work on Hulk, X-Factor, Aquaman, and Young Justice alone... dayenu.

The amount of vitriol thrown his way from faceless Internet hordes... was to be expected. Every now and then they gotta emerge from their caves and unleash the shitcock.

Marvel should do Omnibus volumes of his Hulk run. I think they'd sell, and would help at least a little.

Re: Writer Peter David is in "desperate trouble" with the IRS

I met David at Wonder Con back in 2007. He was such a nice and gracious guy. He had lost a ton of weight and was literally half the man he used to be. We bullshitted for a few minutes and he took a picture with one of the broads I was seeing at the time. Swell guy.

I may throw in a couple of bucks.

Hopefully his ex-wife won't take the money this time.

Let's see if he actually pays the IRS with it.

Hopefully David realizes that this $55,000 is taxable as ordinary income and he is paying tax on IT as well.

But he sort of comes off like a fucking idiot so I doubt it.

He did have a stroke within the last few years, though. I think.

You sure that's Peter David and not Norm Breyfogle?

I'm sorry to hear that, i hope his health is well.

I just want to make sure he knows to pay taxes on the donations as well or he is back to square one.

Small donations are not taxed. I think the limit to hit taxation is like an individual donation of 14 grand. So even a million in small donations is tax free.

I believe he covered that in his initial announcement. He was asking enough to cover the initial delinquent tax bill as well as the tax of the donations themselves.
