Emma Frost used to do it all the time, even when she was a "good guy."

Also it seems obvious that the time traveling teenage X-men are fading away back to the past where Iceman will seemingly 'un-gay' himself into the Iceman we have come to know over the years; it's a sort of pointless basically non-canon (or if canon still moot) wink at diversity... Or am I overlooking something?

Yup, that was what I got out of it. Not that the two versions had distinctly different sexual preferences, but because the older Iceman was just in the closet and didn't want to admit or deal with additional scrutiny. And as the article in the original post here mentions, it's possible that there would be some effect on the old/original Iceman.

Basically we don't know what's going to happen, so believing that anything is insulting seems to be jumping the gun.

This. It seems just as dumb as when DC sent out a press release to announce GL being gay.

Last I checked, Jean Grey and Emma Frost are significantly different characters with different boundaries and ideas about proper use of their powers.

Re: Founding Member of the X-Men comes out of the closet

Wikipedia says that Ice-man has never had successful relationships with women. Is this true? Is that the reason they chose Ice-man to be gay? I remember reading that Jim Shooter made one of the LOSH gay because growing up he saw that this particular character didn't have too much luck with the ladies.

Marvel seems to always one up DC. DC tried to get attention for having Green Lantern come out the closet but it turned out it was the Earth 2 version of GL, Alan Scott, which no one really cares about. It wasn't even the original Alan Scott because that one ceased to exist at the end of Flashpoint.

Iceman has always received less attention than the other founding X-Men. Heck, his cred went up dramatically after being on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

Are you talking about Element Lad? legion fandom, which was gigantic back in the day, concluded that EL was gay because of one line when lighting lass was coming onto him. I think Shooter mentioned that he always assumed the same, but they never did anything to explicitly state that in the comic, and even gave him a love interest in cop Shvaughn Erin. In his five years later Legion, Giffin did a story that revealed that Shvaughn was actually Sean Erin taking drugs to become a woman, and Elemend Lad didn't really care, mwhich surprisingly drew little controversy. In fact, that run of the legion did a lot of very outlandish things (like the whole Proty thing) which I think flew under the radar, but which made it great. It also revealed that Lightning Lass and Shrinking Violet were a couple as well.

Ah this article sums it up:

That was my reaction. When I was reading the Claremont's Uncanny X-Men, Iceman was the most boring character in the book.

Iceman was never in Claremont's X-Men.

Jean "outed" Bobby, and now it is Lois' turn to "out" Clark:

Ok, what I really should have said was that he guest starred in like 5 issues over the course of 17 years.

I'm more taken aback by the fact that founding member of the X-men in these comic panels (Jean & Bobby, who, by now, within the Marvel Universe, should be around 30 years old) look and act like they're teenagers.

That's because time travel; these are the original teens brought to present day [where they co-exist with their older counterparts].

Your comment about Jean just made me realize that her second death has already lasted 11 years, which is pretty stunning considering Marvel seemed to go out of their way to reverse everything Morrison did during his run. For comparison's sake, Jean's first death only lasted 6 years.

Well, in a roundabout way bringing teen Jean into the future was kind of like bringing Jean back from the dead.

Similarly, Gwen Stacy is back now too in a roundabout way with Spider-Gwen from an alternate universe who now is in the main 616 universe.
