The First Annual DVDTalk Horror Comic Book Challenge - October 2014

Any interest? Read at least one horror comic per day all month?

Just an idea to help us get thru our backlogs, generate discussion, and feed my OCD checklist mentality.

Hmm, I need to look at my backlog and see what I have for horror to read.

For original graphic novels are you thinking 20-22 pages equals an issue?

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Horror Comic Book Challenge - 2014

Not sure I could do it every day, but I bet I could read a number of issues over the month, so kind of like my mediocre performance in every watching challenge.

I recently finished the Afterlife with Archie TPB for no "credit," though.

Cool, I have a bunch of Hellboy and BPRD to read, so I should be set. I also have the new 52 Animal Man run and that's pretty horrory, isn't it?

I don't have much by way of horror comics. Currently - Afterlife With Archie. Past - A lot of 70s DC House of Secrets and Vertigo books. But probably not enough left to fill an entire month.

I've read everything else that would qualify.

I'll try to dig around and see what freebies would qualify. But I'm sure there are at least 31 free horror-ish titles on Dark Horse and Comixology.

You could always re-read titles. I'll be doing a mix of old and new.

Yeah, I've been sort of following the film challenges along in my reading on and off for the last year or so. But I figured that we might as well make it official and post about it.

If there are no objections I'll post a thread each month here, and we'll just follow the film Challenges. We'll need a substitute for at least one, September's Criterion. Any suggestions?

Sounds good to me!

I think I'm going to try to get through my Man-Thing Omnibus. I've read some of the original issues back in the 80s and 90s but most of it will be new to me.

That's a good idea; a Read-Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone Challenge.

It's active now for 51 more hours!

I'm reading a graphic novel right now about the Carter Family, but I wouldn't say that's outside my comfort zone. For me that would probably be a month of Liefeld books.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Horror Comic Book Challenge - 2014

Id be in for this...I never read horror comics and it might be cool to switch it up. I'm just wondering what would qualify.

I have most of a books of magic run that i haven't read in years (a good portion of it i probably never read actually). Would that qualify?

Definitely.

I have some House of Mystery and Eerie/Creepy Archives I can tap into. The EC Archives would be great too, though I might not have gotten around to picking any of those up.

How about Sandman?

Oh yeah, I need to read most of that run too! I loved the original Gaiman mini and bought most of the various series over the years, but got behind and resolved to read it all in order someday.

As far as counting, I'm on the very liberal side with that, but I could see most people arguing that all of these Sandman-type Vertigo series are really just Dark Fantasy. Many individual issues or segments are quite horrific, but overall the focus isn't horror.

Id say being more open on what counts. Dark arts/magic should be ok like if someone read justice league dark id say it was ok

I do remember someone watching spiderman for the horror challenge!

Yeah, I would think something like that should count. Coincidentally, I just finished the first volume of that yesterday and have the second one sitting here in my stack of books I borrowed from the library.

Whatcha think of the first volume?

that was one of the books that got me back interested in comics. I was let down by the first volume but got much better when it changed writers

Oooooh! I'm in then. I've had the first 6 issues of JL Dark for awhile but haven't had a chance to read them yet.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Horror Comic Book Challenge - 2014

Going to bed, but tomorrow at work I'll try to find and link to all the freebies that qualify. I'm pretty sure there will be at least 31 of them between Dark Horse and Comixology. Plus with the secondary Free Comic Book Day coming up late in October, I'm sure they'll be several more.

I'm planning on reading some horror comics this month. I might not get one a day, but I'm down for participating.

I don't have any horror comics, but it sounds fun to read at least a few.

Here is a link to all the freebies at Dark Horse, looks like at least 20 of them would count as horror.
