My local shop had Brian K Vaughan's The Private Eye for $15, marked down from $50. I snatched it up.

Just bought Avengers by John Byrne Omnibus

It's a smaller omnibus, and it's mostly his West Coast Avengers run, which I enjoyed back in the late '80s.

It's actually some of Byrne's most underrated work at Marvel. He pulls some great stuff with the Scarlet Witch in this run.

Slop, Phantom...I am strongly considering picking up this Omnibus, because West Coast Avengers was a fun read back in the day. Byrne artwork, and I believe that well regarded Scarlet Witch's babies storyline are part of this omnibus, making it a win in my book.

It's $50 at Instocktrades and also includes the first appearance of the Great Lakes Avengers.

Picked up Before Watchmen: Minutemen/Silk Spectre. I don't like the idea of Watchmen prequels nor the current integration of the characters into the DC Universe so I had no intention of picking this up. However, I loved Darwyn Cooke's work and this was the only thing left by him that I didn't own. Plus it was only $10 for the hardcover.

I picked up most of those cheap at Hamilton Books. I think they didn't have one, but I won't worry about it unless I read the others and feel I'm missing out. Cooke was a big factor for me too.

Silver Age Supergirl Omnibus and Silver Age Justice League of America Vol. 2 Omnibus. I am begging people to buy the Silver Age JL Omnibuses so they will continue making new ones.

Does that Byrne avengers omni overlap with the already existing West Coast avengers omnis?

Nope. For all intents and purposes it's West Coast Avengers Omnibus v3.

Re: What's the last TPB/Graphic Novel you bought?

The only bummer with the Byrne Avengers Omni is that he didn't stay to finish out his story, and the last 10 issues are by other writers. They don't mess it up or anything, but the story does seem to take a bit of a hit at that point, as does the art.

I considered the JL but I'm not really a fan of the era. I recently read Showcase 6, which is what I read as a kid, and even that didn't hold up that well.

I did get Supergirl and World's Finest, though.

Re: What's the last TPB/Graphic Novel you bought?

Amazon has the recent release Alan Brennert Tales of the Dark Knight for only $12.68 in HC ($30 list price) or $12.05 on Kindle. I bought this digitally in the Comixology B1G1 but just bought a physical copy for my niece. Brennert wrote some of my all-time favorite Batman stories.

I got the McFarlane Spidey Omnibus from DCBS. I know some people hate the run, but I like it.

I bought this from Amazon as well. For the price I couldn't pass it up. Due to some unexpected free time today, I was able to read the entire thing in one sitting. That is a rarity for me these days.

Let me give it my highest recommendation. It's a high-quality book with excellent art reproduction. I hadn't read every included issue before, including the Elseworlds Holy Terror story. Brennert pens a very heartfelt introduction letter about his comic book influences.

His love for the Golden Age heroes comes through in almost all the included issues. A couple of the issues are basically farewells to certain JSA members that DC had killed off at the time. I had forgotten the punchline to the included Deadman Christmas story, that surprise reveal was a great moment I hadn't read in decades.

Re: What's the last TPB/Graphic Novel you bought?

I finally made it through the new 52 runs of Worlds Finest (when it was Power Girl and Huntress), Earth 2 and Earth 2 World's End. I bought them all digitally through various sales but finally finished reading them.

Man what a waste of time and money. Actually Worlds Finest and even the early stages of Earth 2 are kinda neat, though disjointed. Then Worlds End just does it all in. I have no idea why they do these weekly series when they can't keep the writing coherent or the art consistent. And then it's obvious that they changed course multiple times for whatever reason. There were multiple times where I was just confused why they were telling certain stories and what was going on. And even the writers famously can't remember the name of Dick's son. And then all this crap leads into the even crappier Convergence.

It doesn't help that I'm a huge fan of The JSA, of pre Crisis Power Girl and Huntress and the New Gods.

I was half tempted to use that Lemire sale to pick up Futures End, but I doubt I'll bother.

Re: What's the last TPB/Graphic Novel you bought?

Futures End starts out pretty great, the first trade is worth picking up. Unfortunately, the second trade collecting Futures End goes nowhere as the story loses steam. Despite loving the first volume, the second volume was tedious enough for me to have put off reading volume 3. Maybe I'll get to it someday.

Same thought process here pretty much. I just picked up all 3(4?) at Hamilton Books for like $9 each, plus a few Showcases at $6 each.

These weekly series just seem like a moneygrab. I really enjoyed 52, and it was all downhill from there (with a huge chasm in Countdown). You'd think they'd actually plot out the entire thing beforehand, since it takes multiple writers and artists, but all seem to end with a fizzle and the feeling that things just went off the rails somewhere along the line.
