A few months ago I got a little interested in trying out Spawn (I've never read it except for a random issue here or there back in the 90's), and I was really confused as to why it was missing from all the digital stores.

...but then I lost interest and forgot about it.

You can probably find a bunch of Spawn #1s in the quarter bin of any convention if you really want to give it a try...

I think #1 is one of those couple issues from the 90's that I have around here somewhere.

I think I bought it for the first year or two. It was better than I expected, but I cut it out in one of my first trims back in my $200 a month Westfield order days.

The Boys by Garth Ennis is on sale on comixology. I've been interested in this but, I need some encouragement. Is it any good?

I enjoyed it a lot. I would put it up there with Preacher, and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Ennis. It is very super hero-oriented, but it's mostly a satire of Marvel and DC franchise characters. The humor and sexual content can be extreme and might be off-putting to some.

The digital omnibus editions look to be the best buy, but I don't know whether or not they include the miniseries Herogasm, Highland Laddie, or Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I was trying to figure out what was the best option on The Boys.
The omnibus editions seem to not include the 3 miniseries, so you'd have to buy those separately.
The TPB editions, however, do have a volume for each miniseries. So if you buy all the trades, you get everything.

So I'll do some math to figure out which is the best.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Okay...So The Boys have a few different buying options. Here they are. All prices pre tax, of course.

3 Omnibus editions & the separate issues for the 3 minis - $72.79
3 Omnibus editions & the three TPBs that include the minis (Volumes 5, 8, & 10) - $69.94
All 12 Trades - $74.88
All 90 individual issues of everything - $89.10

So the best option is to buy the 3 omnibus volumes and then the 3 separate trade volumes for the miniseries.

My only question is if the minis fit into the main series, chronologically. Because if so, the trades seem to have those placed correctly. So buying all the trades might be worth it depending on if you have to figure out where in the omnis you have to stop to read the minis.
...If that's important to you, that is.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

As far as the miniseries go, Herogasm and Highland Laddie take place during the run of the series in the place they are in the individual volumes.

Herogasm presents a sort of side story, and probably should have been part of the main series.

To be perfectly honest, Highland Laddie is kind of a dud. It follows one of the main characters when he takes a sabbatical from the main book and visits his family back home.

The Butcher series is, from what I recall, all backstory, though it's still probably best to read it later in the series.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Also, do the individual issues, or trades, or omnibi contain any exclusive material?

Bob, better buy all three formats and do page by page comparisons for us to be sure

The descriptions of the Omni's do mention that they have "bonus art materials and more!" So that is something else to consider.

Collection only sale until 1/12/14 from Archie on 25 different Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man books.

Garth Ennis' The Boys sale from Dynamite ends 1/11/14; three different formats to choose from, singles, trades, and omnibi. Info from DVDTalk's Bob:
"Okay...So The Boys have a few different buying options. Here they are. All prices pre tax, of course.

From Marvel, ending 1/11/14, a bunch of Deadpool minis, 26 issues total. As much as I want to hate it (because if I like a character I end up buying every appearance), I enjoy Deadpool every time I've read it.

The Marvel collections on sale have cycled.

Trevor, you might get some complaints wherever you post that. My math was a bit off.

The 12 trades are actually $74.88.

Everything else looks like it was correct. Oops.

No complaints yet, but I corrected them. They're not exactly high traffic threads I'm pretty sure.

Fwiw, the 7 sites where I pretty much copy&spate the same posts are:
  • here
  • GOG
  • MobileRead
  • CBR
  • ComicBloc
  • BleedingCool
  • MundensBar or Bullpen or something

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Big Punisher sale until 1/15/14. Odd, I don't own the #1s like I do most every other Marvel title. I guess they weren't part of the big #1 freebie events of the past. In the past I'd buy all these without hesitation, but I'm going to try to limit myself to a couple of the best storyline sin this lot. Any suggestions?

A Zombies versus Robots sale from IDW, ending 1/19/14. Twelve singles and one collection. You may already own the collection, as it was a past freebie. I don't think I've read any of this yet, but it looks fun.

ive read all of these. if for some reason you have not read garth ennis' definitive run on the punisher, buy it all (the majority of pages 1-2 on your link -- basically anything that says marvel knights or marvel max). ive read a lot of punisher and that is my favorite by far.

i also enjoyed the stuff on page 3 where you see the cover art change a bit from the prior run. if youre still in the punisher mood that is good too but i would put it behind the above chunk.

You might be relieved to hear that the FB code does not work on bundles (or at least none of the Marvel ones I tried).

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

The first issue of Marvel's Star Wars is out today. I was pretty excited and ready to buy it...until I stopped by Comixology and saw it was $5.

I'll hold off for the 2-3 years it takes Marvel to drop their digital comics to $2 (if a sale doesn't happen first) to read it.
