Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
This will be a total crapshoot and it all likelihood will just be crap, but Groupon has a deal for 20 comics for $20 or 60 for $30.
They're all from the 80s to today, which means you'll most likely get stuck with a bunch of books from 1993 that were clogging back issue bins. They will all be Marvel/DC books.

The fine print says "If customers aren’t interested in the random collection, they can use the value of their Groupon toward any products of their choice."
Do basically you're just buying a gift certificate for Searchlight Comics and either permitting them to send you their crap they probably can't even move for $0.50 an issue, or you can just buy other stuff at whatever price they set.
Seems like a pretty big rip off. I'm sure most LCSes would sell you a bin of sixty 1993 comics for $15.

Possibly a big price mistake that they may end up honoring, Amazon has a 640 page hardcover of the upcoming SpiderVerse on pre-order for $20.

Anyone used this Comic Bento service? For $20 per month plus shipping, they guarantee a mystery selection of a minimum four different graphic novels from various publishers.
http://comicbento.com/#plans
I came across an ad for it and wondered how the service works out.

I watched a (painful) YouTube video linked on their site. Seems like a cool idea but I already buy a ton and there's so much crap out there, and it's not like I'm eager to add random graphic novels to my already full shelves.

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
From their March pack:
The Coldest City HC - You can buy it new for under $5. A 2012 book that's been on clearance for ages.
The Shadow, Vol. 1: The Fires Of Creation - Another 2012 I could have sworn I saw this on clearance at some point, but right now it looks like it goes for $13ish.
Valiant's Unity Volume 1: To Kill A King - A $10 book from 2014.
Hit List - A Zenescope 2014 title that seems to run for $10, but will surely be in the clearance racks in the future. I think the word Zenescope alone probably says a lot about this.
- So in a best case scenario, you're getting those four random books for about 50% less (assuming a $20 one month splurge) than you'd pay for them if you tried to buy all four individually. But that's a very mixed bag because all four are pretty niche titles.
February's box was:
Miss Fury Vol 1 - 2013 Dynamite title. $10 value.
Ms. Marvel Vol 1 - The new series. Amazon's (and Amazon Marketplace's) current price is pretty inflated. You can find other retailers that sell this for $10.
Shutter Volume 1: Wanderlost - Another $10 or less book
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vol. 1: The Dust Waltz - A 1998 book you can pick up for $5.
- Again, there is some degree of discount here, but it can be real hit and miss.
Before that was:
Amy Devlin Volume 3: Lost and Found HC - I have no idea if it's any good, but they're dropping you into a 3rd volume with this choice. It's also hard to place a realistic value on this, but given that the previous volumes can be had for $5 to $10, I'm sure this one won't stay over $10 very long.
Uncanny Volume 1: Season of Hungry Ghosts - A $10 value for a new copy is fair
Quantum and Woody Volume 1: The World's Worst Superhero Team - An under $10 value. I think Valiant might even sell this volume discounted to try and hook people.
Judge Anderson: The Psychic Crime Files - I think IDW had excess stock of this a while back, but $15 is probably a fair value for this.
- So this is probably the best box of the three I looked at.
All in all you're getting a fair price on the books at $20 (or less) per month, but the bigger question still has to be whether it's worth gambling on this random assortment which could easily have one or more pure stinkers (Zenescope? 1998 Buffy? Amy Devlin?) or already discounted books in it. If you're willing to read random books and pay for them, it's not a bad deal. I personally wouldn't go for it, but that's just me.

The Amy Devlin book is the kind of thing that will keep me from using this. I don't want to get Vol. 3 of a series I don't read.

Thanks, that assortment is pretty much what I expected from a random grab bag of stuff. I could see the choices getting better if the service ever got popular. What I don't really like is that it automatically renews each month.

Curiously does the Spider-verse hardcover come with a digital code?

No digital code. Also the big complaint is that it doesn't offer the issues in chronological order, the series are all grouped together, despite there being a guide at the front of the book telling you what the reading order is (and hey, no page numbers, so good luck!).
But for 20+ bucks, eh, I'll live.

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
Readers here will definitely want to swing by Ross stores in the next week. They've had them before in very limited quantities but it appears that around two weeks ago, most locations got in these very spiffy 19x13 wood-backed reproductions of classic comic book covers from various decades. Both Marvel and DC are included, though whomever was picking them out did a much better job with the DC covers. They can be found in the wall art section of most Ross stores.
They sell for $9.99 apiece. There is a pretty big variety of covers and characters available, from Batman to the Hulk. I've seen less Marvel covers for whatever reason. There are even a couple of Golden Age covers, including an Alan Scott Green Lantern. These look great in person, the color reproduction is fantastic. A couple of enterprising resellers have a few available on eBay:

I've visited several stores and come across few of the Marvel covers. I've seen one X-Men cover and a single Spider-Man cover. I get the feeling that resellers might have picked up all the interesting Marvel covers to sell on eBay in wake of the Avengers movie and will return them at the end of the return period. My favorite one so far is an early 1970s Detective Comics cover.

My Ross only had one left, a Hulk cover that was cool, but not quite cool enough to add to my piles. Would have loved most of the DC ones.

Getting back to the Ross comic book art, apparently there was a much deeper variety of them than I possibly imagined. Batman and Superman each received at least nine separate covers in this line.

Please forgive the multi-thread cross post everyone, but we're doing a Christmas in July gift exchange here in Comic Book Talk and wanted to give everyone a chance to participate.
Everyone will be given a name, you'll PM each other addresses, and send a little mystery gift bag of comics or comic-related trinkets.
Don't reply in this thread, but please see the below thread for more details and to sign up.
