New stephen king novel coming [Joyland]

New York, NY; London, UK (May 30, 2012)—Hard Case Crime, the award-winning line of pulp-styled crime novels published by Titan Books, today announced it will publish JOYLAND, a new novel by Stephen King, in June 2013. Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, JOYLAND tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. JOYLAND is a brand-new book and has never previously been published. One of the most beloved storytellers of all time, Stephen King is the world’s best-selling novelist, with more than 300 million books in print.

Stephen King commented, "I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book."

I hope it's better than The Colorado Kid.

I almost picked it up, but it looked kind of hokey...of course, you can't judge a book by its cover. I'd have to read it to know if it was hokey or not.

My hardcover copy arrived yesterday -- though I'm likely not going to get to it for another week or so. Also, I'm really digging the McGinnis covers (PB & HB):

*Also, updated the thread title to include the title of the book

I'm pretty sure that Glen Orbik did the PB cover. They're both great though.

^ Thanks for the correction. The McGinnis cover has his familiar girl who has adorned the covers of several other HCC books and Orbik's work continues to impress.

Just finished this a few hours ago.

It didn't really feel like a King book but it fit the HCC perfectly in my opinion.

The characters were easy to connect to and the backdrop of the amusement park and "carny" lifestyle worked well for the story.

Just finished this. The writing style and characterizations are still 100% King. The pulpy covers are misleading. It's not at all hokey ... quite a serious and moving little story. And it has none of the bloat that so much of his work (at least since he became famous) has.

Really enjoyed this. The older I get the more melancholy tone to a lot of King's recent work appeals to me. And yes, less bloat than many of his more ambitous works... and MILES better than Colorado Kid which ranks with the worst of King for me.

I got this book on Sat and finished it by Sun night, couldn't put it down. It was a great read. I love how well developed his characters are. King really makes you care for them, even the kiddo.

I really enjoyed this one. It had classic King characters and more importantly, a very solid ending. Highly recommended.

Re: New stephen king novel coming [Joyland]

I enjoyed the book until the ending. I was so jarred by the stupidity of how King gets the narrator and the killer to the amusement park, I couldn't get my mind back into the story. I don't think I have ever read anything dumber than this sequence of events:

Spoiler:

Killer phones narrator, announces he is the killer and demands Narrator come meet him alone at amusement park.
Narrator knows killer plans to murder him.
Killer warns narrator not to phone the police.
Narrator does not phone police.
Instead, Narrator takes time to write a note, letting his landlady know where he's going and who he is meeting, so when he turns up dead, she'll know who the killer is, rather than waking his landlady up (she's in the next room for Christ's sake!) and having her phone the police as he runs out the door to keep the killer from murdering his girlfriend.

When it comes to creating great characters and settings, King is fantastic, but more and more, the stories he places them in aren't worth a damn.

I just finished this and I loved it. I'm a sucker for coming-of-age stories though. My favorite King book that I have read so far, but I've only read 3.

You love coming-of-age stories, so I assume you've read IT. If not, get moving!

I haven't, but I hate CLOWNS! That has kept me from reading it. The only King books that I have read so far are Under The Dome, The Shawshank Redemption short story, and Joyland. I have 11/22/63, The Green Mile, The Shining and Doctor Sleep, but I haven't read them yet.

Don't let your CLOWN fear get in the way of some of King's best characters. IT is one of his best.

And remember, fear is part of the King experience too.

Re: New stephen king novel coming [Joyland]

Just finished it and really enjoyed it, but there was one outstanding question that I had to go online to find out:

Spoiler:
I didn't know the resolution of Mike repeatedly telling Dev "It's not white". I didn't really think that the question was answered that well in the book, but it seems to be implying that the murderer's dyed hair was not white underneath, like Dev though, but blonde. Even a throwaway line where Dev recognizes that is what Mike was talking about would have been nice, but I guess King left it up to the reader to infer it.
