Re: What Are You Reading? (January 2016)

Finished T.H. White -- The Once and Future King.

Knocked off Terry Pratchett -- Carpe Jugulum.

The Once and Future King is a 20th century psychological novel. It's deeply concerned with the drives and repressions of its characters. King Arthur is unaware of something he subconsciously knows but doesn't want to think about. Mordred has mommy issues. I still liked it.

Carpe Jugulum is another fun Diskworld book. I'm slowly reading the series. It will be disappointing after I finished them all.

I'm three-quarters through Bob Altermeyer -- The Authoritarians. So far it's been excellent.

Killing Floor: A Jack Reacher Novel
by Lee Child

It's ok, not very cerebral.

I agree with the following amazon review:
"I enjoyed "Killing Floor," recognizing it for the entertaining fairy tale that it is. Child does not try for realism. If you can stomach tremendous carnage and you like non-stop action, then you will enjoy "Killing Floor"."

^ Honestly, I wasn't terribly impressed with the early Reacher books. I nearly gave up on the series after reading a handful of them, but decided to push on. They gradually improved as Child got better at his craft. I've read 12 or so now in order and the past several have all been quite good.

Am currently reading:

I'm nearing the end, and some of the incompetence ascribed to the experts in the book is just ludicrous. This book is rated 4/5 by amazon reviewers. Seriously??

It's taken me about 2 months to finish the book because I keep losing interest.

I don't think I will be reading another Reacher book.

BTW, have any of your read The Executioner series from Don Pendleton?

Re: What Are You Reading? (January 2016)

I'm reading King's The Gunslinger at the moment, decided to re-read the Dark Tower series. I'll finish this one up tonight and start The Drawing of the Three tomorrow, it has been years since I read this book.

I'm at about page 600/856 pages and I'm really, really enjoying this! Lots of technical details on space flight, but I think that makes it all the better.

Re: What Are You Reading? (January 2016)

I'm in the middle of book two of Bernard Cornwell's "Warlord Chronicles", his alt-take on the legend of King Arthur, rooting it in a stronger historical milieu:

Absolutely loving it thus far.

I grew up on them. All the Gold Eagle books, but mainly Mack Bolan, Phoenix Force, and Able Team. Even had a subscription in the 80s where they'd send you 6 new novels every two months.

Total pulp trash, but enjoyable buttkickin' 80's Reagan-era paramiltary trash.

Finished:

If you've read any other Joe Ledger book, you know what you're getting here. Drone technology gone amok makes for a good thriller plot, and I'm intrigued by the allusions to the supernatural in one of the villains.

Re: What Are You Reading? (January 2016)

Kind of reading

Some of it is pretty interesting, some of it not so much (some of the background just doesn't seem that pertinent). So I kind of skim the parts that are boring, and stick to the interesting bits.
