Gardner is playing with hardboiled detective conventions. The protagonist is a scrawny little guy who keeps getting beat up by thugs. But he's a mean bastard, so the thugs regret it later.

I'm on to Excalibur, the final book in Bernard Cornwell's "Warlord" trilogy (his historical take on Arthurian legend):



I'm also reading Mary Stewart's "Crystal Cave" at the same time, for a more traditional fantasy take:
