David Weber - Honor Harrington #1: On Basilisk Station

Weber doesn't give a damn about character development. I was ready to set the book down by the time the action started around page 50. But the action is enough fun that I'll wait to see where it's going.

Short and fast reading. Without spoiling myself, I've heard how a lot of fans of the Dresden files say it doesn't really get good until 4-5 books later. Which bodes well for me wanting to read more of these. Though I'm sure it'll reach the point every ongoing series does for me eventually ... seeming like product the author cranks out for the easy money. At least I have a ways to go before that.

I read (and absolutely loved) The Fold first, and couldn't wait to tackle 14. I found it very slow and un-engaging at the beginning, does it pick up?

I think so. Maybe it's been handicapped for you since you already pretty much know the big secret behind the building and have seen the "big bad". Like The Fold, there's a definite point where it shifts from slow-building mystery to balls-out horror-action.

"Elfstones of Shannara" by Terry Brooks. I read it in high school, which is a long time ago, and wanted to refresh my memory since I'm watching the MTV adaptation. Boy they changed a lot.
