Re: No audiobook fans?

I love audio books, I listen to them at work, it makes the day go faster, and I also listen while driving. I have used audible off and one since 2005, before that when I was a printer, I use to buy books on tape and I would listen during the day and then my ex husband would listen to the same book at night when he would be printing. Right now I am working my way thru the entire Outlander series, I have either read or listen to all of it except the last book.

Re: No audiobook fans?

I just have two audiobooks at home and though I haven't got a chance to get my hands on others, I listen to and then re-listen to the two whenever I get some time to myself. One is In A Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. This one is like a tour of the lethal animals of Australia and is full of punchlines. The other one is the ubiquitous Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. The story seems all the more magical when you hear it somehow; especially love Jim Dale's rich, deep voice.

Re: No audiobook fans?

I've been interested in audiobooks for a while now. I haven't bought any yet, but I would like to try them out. A lot of the time I don't have time to sit down and read so an audiobook would take care of that problem. I need to try one or two.

Jim Dale's Harry Potter readings are truly magnificent. Wish that rich bitch would put them on Audible.

What does this kind of casual misogyny contribute to the discussion at all?

I think podcasts are a very different thing than audiobooks.

Not when someone like Scott Sigler does it. He'll release a new novel as a series of episodes via his podcast.

I'd imagine that if the book is in the public domain, you can do an audiobook of it yourself if you like and release it as a podcast.

They are wonderful. Unfortunately, I have most of them on cassette (in some cases more than once, my parents' own them) rather than CD, and upgrading would be pricey.

I like them. I just listened to Stephen King's Joyland and am on the last disc of Mr. Mercedes.

Yeah, but it's a rare thing when a podcast is actually someone reading a book. Usually a podcast is a person or a small group of people loosely following some show notes and spitballing about some topic for that podcast episode.

True, but he said "serial podcast," which is what Sigler does.

Yeah, I guess a serialized podcast can seem a lot like an audiobook, but I still think an audiobook is essentially one or more narrators reading a written book chapter by chapter. And for me that is clearly different from a podcast host covering a single topic even if it's done over multiple podcast episodes.

Re: No audiobook fans?

Does Audible ever run site wide sales? Or just random deals on select things?

Not really. The closest to a site wide deal is what they did for April with the "buy 4 books with a regular price above some set amount and get a coupon of a certain dollar value."

Other than that, the specials for members are usually to buy books off some limited list of titles for some sort of discount (for a couple of examples, "only $4.95 each" or "buy 2 get 1 free" are common).

Re: No audiobook fans?

I've gotten into the "Whispersync For Voice" feature recently for syncing up a Kindle book with its Audible audiobook version.

But it doesn't work for every book I have on both Kindle and Audible formats, so I wonder why this feature isn't built-in for every book they have on both formats.

They also have a "daily deal" which I have been neglecting lately...

Today the deal is The Starling Project: An Audible Drama written by Jeffery Deaver.

They do have a monthly freebie, usually a classic. Don't yet know what the offering is this month.

Re: No audiobook fans?

One ended yesterday, but they routinely have a buy 4 audiobooks get a $10 coupon deal. The books have to retail at $14.95 or more but can be on sale or whispersync companion prices. Yesterday I bought 4 free kindle books with 99 cent whispersync audible companions and got the $10 coupon.

Re: No audiobook fans?

That Great Courses sale is an absolute bargain. They are $7/course (they usually start at $40-$50) and are well worth the money.

Using the sale and a single audible credit I picked up the following for $49:
Over 120 hours of lectures for a steal. Thanks for the heads up aintnosin!
