Re: What are you reading? (April 2014)

Busy month ... only had time to read one more book

Finished:

Good book ... right up my alley with other phantasmagorical fantasies that I've enjoyed. I don't think I ever completely bought into the central romance, but still a well-written book that went by quite easily. I shudder to think of the kind of movie they'll make this into (which will undoubtedly pander to the Twilight/Hunger Games audience).

The first line quoted in the thread about its upcoming film adaptation prompted me to pick up Stephen Hunter's Dirty White Boys. That has to be one of the best opening chapters I've ever read. A hell of a fun read and very nasty.

What would have happened then? He should have just mounted a guard on Mount Doom as the only way to destroy the ring and then gone on to beat the west with conventional forces.

I also think there were some contemporary influences at work. Theodon was Hitler for one. Juliet Romeo Romeo, wherefore art thou?
The whole war against Sauron was a feint to distract him from the real attack: bringing the Ring to Mt Doom. Sauron wanted to have the Ring so badly that he couldn't conceive of anyone being willing to destroy it. The allies knew that they couldn't defeat Sauron, so their real job was to hold out for as long as possible to give Frodo time to complete his mission.

If Sauron had figured out their strategy and guarded Mount Doom, it would have been a much shorter book.

The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett.

I thought it was okay, and I see the attraction, but Pratchett became a much better writer.
