What are you reading? (April 2014)

Re: What are you reading? (April 2014)
Busy month ... only had time to read one more book
Finished:
Good book ... right up my alley with other phantasmagorical fantasies that I've enjoyed. I don't think I ever completely bought into the central romance, but still a well-written book that went by quite easily. I shudder to think of the kind of movie they'll make this into (which will undoubtedly pander to the Twilight/Hunger Games audience).

The first line quoted in the thread about its upcoming film adaptation prompted me to pick up Stephen Hunter's Dirty White Boys. That has to be one of the best opening chapters I've ever read. A hell of a fun read and very nasty.

Just finished book V of The lord of the Rings. Starting the last book now. It made me think that Sauron had such an overwhelming advantage that even after the siege of Gondor was broken he could have taken the city and killed everyone before Frodo completed his task. What would have happened then? He should have just mounted a guard on Mount Doom as the only way to destroy the ring and then gone on to beat the west with conventional forces.
I also think there were some contemporary influences at work. Theodon was Hitler for one. Juliet Romeo Romeo, wherefore art thou?

If Sauron had figured out their strategy and guarded Mount Doom, it would have been a much shorter book.
