It's been a while since I read it, but the IT references were the only ones that stuck out at me.

I agree about it being a great ending. King should thank his son, Joe Hill, for making the suggestion because the original ending was different.

The book reminded me of Ken Grimwood's Replay, which is about two people who replay the years 1963 to 1988 over and over. The more they try to change the past, the worse things get cause as King would say "the past is obdurate".

Nobody's mentioned this, I may have make and model wrong but:

Spoiler:
The red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury always parked by the rabbit hole, also driven by Sadie's ex. Christine?

Re: Stephen King: "11/22/63" (releases on 11/8/11)

Way behind everyone, but I finally got around to this book. Pretty good if a bit overlong (like many of King's books since the mid 80s have been). And thank you to Joe Hill for talking his dad out of whatever dumb ass ending he originally had in mind.

The Oswald stuff was the least interesting aspect of the book. The book eventually addressed it, but unless you were personally traumatized by JFK's assassination I don't see why it would see a big deal to risk your life to change it. Sure, an assassination is bad and maybe Vietnam could've been changed. But the world didn't suffer nuclear destruction (like many thought) in the long run and the Cold War ended.

I wished there was more of the harder sci-fi stuff. But at least King used it at the end to much greater effect than he did in "Dome".

And for those who haven't read it, "Replay" is a great book. And if you're in the mood for a classic time travel novel, I second King's own strong recommendation of Jack Finney's "Time and Again".

I finally starting reading this, too, after it had been on my Kindle for a while, just waitin' for me. I'm to the third trip just starting but now the semester is starting so I don't know how much longer it will take me, unfortunately. Pity, because I like it.

I finally read this, and the middle parts about Amberson's new life in Texas were the best parts for me. The Kennedy stuf was interesting, but not the focus of the book IMO.

Finished yesterday. Great book --- better than Under the Dome, IMO. The ending was perfect and could have only been handled the way it was.

If this book was to be made on film it would make a great 30 minute TWILIGHT ZONE episode.
I agree it would be good episode for a anthology type show like Twilight Zone. King sold the film rights before the book's release and Jonathan Demme signed on to direct and adapt the screenplay. Demme dropped later on after he had issues with King. I think a mini-series adaptation would be better than a two hour movie. I wouldn't be surprised if a movie never gets made.

I agree with you on the ending.
Spoiler:
I also found it a bit depressing because Sadie spent the rest of her life alone.

[SPOILER]But she had an incredibly rich and fulfilled life -- just less a husband or Jake / George.[SPOILER]

Yeah, the whole Kennedy thing was just a MacGuffin, but it's still the best King book I've read in ages.

Thanks for posting the link. I think this might work better as a TV show or mini-series. Maybe it would work as 3 or 4 13 episode seasons on a cable network.

Re: Stephen King: "11/22/63" (releases on 11/8/11)

Sorry for the bump but finally got around to reading this book. I've had it since Christmas of 2011.

Anyway, I really really enjoyed the book. I blazed through the book in 2.5 days. I couldn't wait to get to see how he ends it. And I was not disappointed in the ending. As others have said, it was a perfect ending.

I would put this in the Top 5 of my fav Stephen King books/novellas.

As to it being made into a movie/TV show.... I vote a solid 2+ hour movie. IF it comes to the small screen, a 2-parter would suffice. Anything longer would have needless filler.

I read it, and forgot what the ending was. Can you put it in spoiler tabs for me?

Re: Stephen King: "11/22/63" (releases on 11/8/11)

Spoiler:
After realizing that saving JFK did not make the world better, the protagonist goes back in time even further to kill Hitler. Just as he's about to do so the "Time Cops" (the guys with the badges seen throughout the book) burst in and kill him before he can kill Hitler. Turns out the time portals were built by the Nazis to ensure the survival of the Third Reich.

Re: Stephen King: "11/22/63" (releases on 11/8/11)

Forgot that I even posted in this thread, but I just finished reading it over the course of these past few days (as my previous post indicated, it is indeed my first King novel). I really liked it. Few thoughts:

Spoiler:

Agreed with many of you that in the middle, the Oswald stalking got quite repetitive.

The two kids he gives dancing advice to in the field- I was wondering about them the whole time, since he mentioned them a few times later - and here I learn that they're in some other books. I'll have to look up and see what other references there were.

And here's a link to King's original ending:

Re: Stephen King: "11/22/63" (releases on 11/8/11)

I'm about 43% in and...eh. It's okay, I guess. A LOT of "I did this, and then I did this, and then I went here, and the banner said JIFFY BURGERS ARE GREAT!, and then I did this thing, and the past is groovy." It's been years since I've read King and I can't remember if this is how he usually tells stories. I remember The Shining, Misery, It, and The Stand being WAY more thoughtful and complex. Zero depth to this one (so far).

Don't forget the "I bought this. The price was fifty cents. Much lower than 2011."

Re: Stephen King: "11/22/63" (releases on 11/8/11)

I bought the kindle edition on dec 30 2012 and I have about 50 pages left.

Did the last 200 or so pages with the audible app with Craig Wasson reading.

He's very good.

Love the book and glad to see that it will have a decent ending.

After he comes back to see what he has done, what is described is haunting me with all the detailed
history of the world over the last 40 years or so.

This storytelling is King at his best for me.

First book I've started and finished in 2 decades.

Now I might look at what is My favorite King book and read again The Talisman and then finally read The Black House.
