Re: Stephen King working on sequel to The Shining
I don't have high hopes. Let's be honest, there's a point when a book (or film) becomes such a cultural milestone that you could NEVER create something that people would find to be on the same level. The Shining is one of those books.
It's Black House all over again.

Vampires that feed on psychic energy vs. a boy who has psychic/mind powers. Makes sense to me. Not saying I love the idea, but it doesn't baffle me the way it seems to baffle some folks.

Considering everything Stephen King writes is "FICTION," his fans shouldn't be so hoity-toity regarding this new fake thing he's writing. lol.
Frankly, if his fans bought the premise of The Shining, this shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

I can't wait for the sequel to Firestarter where we learn the Shop was created to breed even stronger Breakers.

Same here. It sounds like a really loose type of sequel. Now if it was something like the Overlook Hotel was rebuilt and ghosts start wreaking havoc - only to be saved by adult Danny and his good ghost dad ... that would be some stupid shit. But this? It sounds like it could almost be a case where King laid out of the plot at first, with no relation to "The Shining". And then maybe thought "Hey ... I need a psychic main character ... let's make it Danny 30 years after 'The Shining'". Peter Straub does this kind of thing all the time.

In his autobiography, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, King states that he rarely plots out novels. I'll bet what's closer to the truth is he thought, "I wonder what Danny is up to now. ...And I wonder what would be the biggest challenge to a psychic... Probably someone who would take the power away for their own, like suck it out of him somehow. ...Hmm..."

From a recent WSJ article http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...980143566.html
He's 500 pages into a sequel to his 1977 classic "The Shining," about a possessed writer in a haunted hotel and his psychic son, Danny. In the sequel, Danny is grown up and working in a nursing home, where he specializes in helping people as they die.

Re: Stephen King working on sequel to The Shining
Ten Things I Learned From “The Shining:”
01: REDRUM is murder spelled backwards
02: All work and no play make Jack a dull boy
03: anytime your kid talks to his finger is time to worry
04: just because you can enjoy reading is no safety net against cabin fever
05: Danny’s imaginary friend (finger) is named Tony because Danny’s middle name is Anthony
06: Learned that Winnifred is neither a Winnie or a Freddie, but a Wendy
07: Topiary animals at a Colorado resort aren’t to be trusted
08: the Overlook Hotel is a fan of Edgar Allen Poe’s “Mask of the Red Death”
09: the Overlook Hotel is picky on which caretakers to haunt, as there was a gap between the Gradys and the Torrances
10: Halloran’s shining was strong enough from Florida to know Danny was in trouble, but not strong enough to warn him that Jack was hiding behind a corner to kill him.

Re: Stephen King working on sequel to The Shining
Here's the cover synopsis:
Is it just me, or does that sound an awful lot like the plot of Black House?
Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the "steam" that children with the "shining" produce when they are slowly tortured to death.
Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant "shining" power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep."
Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Started today. Just finished the part that covers Danny's childhood after the Overlook. Very good so far.
