If I had to pick one book by Thompson it would be Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. Not only being my favorite HST work it is also one of the best books on politics you will ever read.
Don't let the film of Las Vegas stop you from reading the book. As a piece of literature I've always believed that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is an unfilmable book. Gilliam's version doesn't disprove that to me.

I was always partial to the Rum Diary almost wished he wrote another like that. Not that exciting of a book and most hst fans don't care for it. Quite an easy read though, and plenty over the hill food for thought.
