I love Calvin and Hobbes, and I have all the collections. The Far Side is funny but it doesn't hook me the same way.
My other favorite is Dilbert. It's funny, I didn't care for it when I read it in college (an odd choice for a college newspaper, I must say) but after a few years in the "real world" it is just hilarious.

Calvin and Hobbes is the best by far. Farside is great, so are Dilbert and Fox Trot.
These four are the only collections I buy.

I've loved Far Side since I was about 11 years old. Calvin and Hobbes is my second favorite though. The hours fly by. Other than those two I like Non Sequitur by Wiley: http://www.ucomics.com/nonsequitur/

Even tho I just dropped $80 on the Complete Far Side, I still prefer Calvin and Hobbes - picked up the first collection at Waldenbooks the other day for $7 (clearanced) and loved going back through them

Calvin all the way, I've gotten chuckles out of Far Side but there are no real characters to love and follow.
As for what I like today, Mutts is my favorite current strip -- also dig For Better or Worse, Fox Trot, Boondocks. Berkely Breathed's new "Opus" strip is one of the bigger pointless wastes of space I've seen in a while, though, sadly...

Calvin And Hobbes, no question. I grew up reading the strip and it truly spoke to my imagination when I was a child, and all of the strips still seem fresh to me after all these years.

Then early years of Bloom County...Peanuts...Far Side...Dilbert
Lately, I like Fox Trot when the youngest son is in it, Luann when Luann isn't in the strip, Mutts, and Non Sequitor.

Calvin & Hobbs, hands down.
While I like The Far Side too, I don't think it holds a candle to C & H.

Like most everyone else who's posted, while I find The Far Side brilliant and funny, the emotional investment one puts into Calvin and Hobbes makes it a clear favorite.
I don't read the comics page much anymore. I read a few of the Foxtrot collections and enjoyed them a lot. I reccently picked up one of the new little collections, and was dismayed to see that that Amends was now using only three panels.
The comic's page is almost embarrassing to look at these days. Peanuts used a very simplistic art style, but it suited the strip and was clearly chosen for artistic purposes. When I look at the threadbare lines in the comic pages today, I'm sure they all look that way out of laziness on the part of the artist, or the need by the syndicate to allow papers to squeeze as many strips in as possible.
Can anyone name some other strips besides For Better or For Worse and Doonesbury that don't look like they were drawn in two minutes?

I think with comics, like with movies and music and books and games, is that the majority of it is crap and you have to tread through the crap to get to the good stuff.
Yeah back in the day these were great, but it was only these two, back in the day they were surrounded by crap as well. Family Circus hasn't gotten worse, it's always been this bad.

Well according to my collection of numerous Calvin and Hobbes books and one Far Side, Far Side it its. Calvin is timeless in my opinion but Far Side is unique in its method of humor that no other comic could ever copy.

Those are definitely my top two of all time. Tough decision.
Went with Far Side because there is a little of everything, there was a strong dose of science, and because I like the one-liners that make you pause for a nanosecond before you get it completely.
