I would like to read some Zombie/Living Dead Horror Books.

Any suggestions?

I would really appreciate it.

[A recycled & edited post from 2001]

I guess these will tend to be found under Science Fiction or Horror aka Dark Fantasy. Wasn't King's The Tommyknockers [kind of] zombie-related?

Aside from the "factual", the films seem to be more prevalent than the novels. In fact, most of the novels my brief search found were actually based on films....

There are some digital-only books like:But, in contrast, apparently "Dawn of the Dead" by George A. Romero and Susanna Sparrow actually preceded the film.

I also came across:
  • Zombie! by Peter Tremayne
  • Wet Work by Philip Nutman
  • Resident Evil series by S. D. Perry
  • The Drum, the Doll, and the Zombie by John Bellairs, Brad Strickland (juvenile)
  • The Anita Blake, zombie-raiser series by Laurell Hamilton
  • The Mammoth Book of Zombies Edited by Stephen Jones
  • The Ultimate Zombie Edited by Byron Preiss & John Betancourt
  • THE BOOK OF ALL FLESH Anothology Novel Edited by James Lowder
  • Brand New Cherry Flavor by Todd Grimson "pokes at Hollywood and has voodoo, zombies, sex, and drugs"
And, not to [ ahem ] open a can of worms, aren't vampires a kind of zombie?

If Vampires are kinda Zombies then so are Government workers.

Anyway, Thanks for the suggestions! I had heard the name "Anita Blake" before but I didn't know it had anything to do with Living Dead.

Try to locate copies of "Book of the Dead" and "Still Dead," both edited by John Skipp and Craig Spector.

These are anthologies, released in the late 80s/early 90s, and contain stories inspired by Romero's trilogy by a variety of horror writers.

Both are out of print, but the paperbacks can occasionally be found in used bookstores.

Lot's of good ones mentioned so far. I strongly suggest your checkout The Dead by Mark Rogers.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

Reign of The Dead and it's sequel by Len Barnhart are also pretty good.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books
Lastly if you want a really good read grab The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

Avoid The Rising at all costs it's an overhyped POS.

Might you be the same guy from Virginia that said the same thing on Amazon's reviews. It seems that everyone else gave it 5 stars.

No that was posted by my evil twin brother Skippy. Seriously though here is why I feel that way and I will try my best not to spoil the book. First off the main plotline of the book is never resolved. Cliffhanger endings to setup sequels are fine but I'm sure we have all read enough of these types of books to know you finish the story of book one then setup book two. This book is hyped as not being like all other zombie books because ooh the zombies in this book are smarter. This is true but doesn't make this story standout against any other zombie book. I could say allot more but I'll finish with this point. The setting of the book is just off it starts off well after the dead have risen so this cuts allot of explanation. These books work much better when you meet the characters before or right as the dead rise and watch them fight to survive.

Clive Barker's "Coldheart Canyon"- all sorts of supernatural creatures and the ghosts or remnants of Hollywood movie stars from the 20's, 30's and 40's PLUS graphic sex. How could you ask for more?
It sounds like a strange mix, but it was a great read!

Ah, yes DEADWORLD. What an awesome comic. Vincent Locke's art was incredible. And I loved the fact that they had two covers. One graphic, and one for wusses.

I think ARROW were the original publishers of DEADWORLD.

I do highly recommend BOOK OF THE DEAD,edited by Skipp and Spector. A truly incredible anthology based on Romero's Dead series.

Just picked up two paperbacks dealing with zombies:

The Rising by Brian Keene
Risen by J. Knight

Started on The Rising. So far so good. In addition to the regular human or is it unhuman zombies there are zombie cats, mice, fish etc. Extremely graphic so if this suits your taste pick it up.

While i the Anita Blake series has a decent amount of zombie stuff without focusing heavily on it I can't recommend them enough. I've torn through this series like none other and have loved every book i've read so far. Damn_good series.

YES! Great books, edited by two very good writers BTW.

OH now thats cool!

I've always wondered about animals in Zombie situations. There's no reason to believe animals wouldn't be zombies too.

UPDATE:

I picked those two up

I would highly recommend another Simon Clark title, Stranger which has post-virus zombies.

Bentley Little - The Walking
From the back cover: "Across the country, they have risen. And they seem to have a mission....The walking has begun...No one knows why they are walking. No one knows where they are going. And no one can stop them....They are here."

Quick plot summary: Private investigator Miles Huerdeen is on a mission to find a link between the victims in a bizarre nationwide string of deaths dating back decades, his own recurring nightmares and an elderly client's prophetic handwritten list of dead men's names. Miles's world is suddenly turned upside down when he discovers his own father, who suffered a fatal stroke, purposefully striding around his bedroom, naked except for a pair of cowboy boots, having scared off his "God-Fearing Christian" nurse. Miles's obsession with his father's transformation into a zombie leads him to the families of other dead "walkers" and on a supernatural journey into the Arizona desert.

The Walking is very good. It alternates between two stories, one past, one present. Bentley Little is becoming a favorite of mine. Recently finished The Policy, it was a great read.

I disagree.

I can't put it down because this book is friggin' crazy as Hell. It's not the typical Romero type stuff and there are all kinds of living dead in this book. I mean there's nowhere to go in this book If the Human zombies don't get you then the animals might. Even escaping on water poses a threat due to possible whale zombies and shark zombies.

Spoiler:
it does remind me of DEADWORLD in that the Zombies are demon possesed and not the typical stupid virus/radiation born type. They also seem to have a Zombie leader of sorts. The animal zombies are some of the most freaky after the babie zombies. Some are faster than others but still clumsy and slow due to rot. The Zombies are also cunning in that the set traps. Even the animals ambush humans and eat them. Bottomline, if you hate relatively fast, smart, and evil zombies then this book may disappoint.

I saw the "Zombie Survival Guide" the other day at the bookstore. Looks hilarious, and pretty accurate in terms of "Zombie Mythology," if you will.

I had zombies in the novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo. It's pretty tough to avoid the usual clichés and situations.

I've heard of it.

Frankly, Living Dead movies and stories freak me out more than any other genre. I can think of many "survival rules".
