I'll second The Walking Dead by Kirkman, great series, I would pick up the first couple trades and give it a try

In a funny little update. I've actually become good friends with Brian Keene since my earlier post. I actually get killed in the sequel to the Rising called City Of The Dead. Which will be out in limited edition early next month and in mass market paperback in June. If you like The Rising you will love City Of The Dead Keene takes the story to the next level and beyond. Also deals are signed for the movie and comic version of The Rising.

That sounds great. Keene seems like a nice guy and that's cool that you got into his book. I've been really looking forward to the sequel because The Rising was a great book.

Another vote here for Max Brooks's Zombie Survival Guide. It was my favorite book of last year and is a great read. It is so real, it will have you honestly believing everything in it is plausible.
To the point that when I saw Shaun of the Dead, I loved the movie completely, except for one small thing: Spoiler:

The Rising is out of print from Leisure. You may still be able to find some stores that still have copies in stock though. For more info and some good laughs checkout Keene's blog at http://www.hailsaten.blogspot.com/ If you click the logs for 10/01/04-10/31/04 you will even find yours truly hiding in the back of the last picture of the Winning The War On Terror Post. Lastly if anyone wants a peek at the original ending to The Rising just let me know I still have a copy of it from and older fan club post.

I just bought The Rising a couple of days ago. Hell if it is going for $80 maybe I'll go buy another copy to sell on ebay.

Been looking everywhere for a copy of The Rising. Can't find it here in Australia and the few sites that have it in stock don't ship internationally.

The limited hardcover of The Rising goes for around 200+ on Ebay if you can find someone willing to sell a copy. The limited hardcover for the sequel City Of The Dead was $50 but it's been sold out for awhile now.

City Of The Dead No Spoilers Review
Well I recieved my leather bound slipcased lettered "whew that's a long discription" copy of City Of The Dead the sequel to The Rising last night. I then proceeded to finish off the book in one sitting. This book is one hell of a fast paced ride and this time the ending is perfect. I don't want to say too much since it will be a few months for the paperback but this one is a must read. Probably the only thing I didn't like about this book was an annoying character named Branson but luckily he dies a painful death.

My ten year old nephew is getting into zombie flicks and he's an avid reader, so in my role as The Cool Uncle, I'd like to nuture both interests. I thought it'd be cool that for his eleventh birthday in June I'd give him a box of zombie goodness.
My question is, what books (preferrably in print and widely available - don't want to pay high ebay prices) would be appropriate for an eleven year old? He's allowed to watch R rated movies with his parents (or me) and likes Shaun of the Dead and the Dawn of the Dead remake. I think he's seen some old B&W zombie movies with his dad, maybe even NOTLD (I would hope). I realize that gore is inherent in the genre, but would like to steer away from a completely over-the-top gorefest, as well as excessive bad language and sex (necrophilia would be right out). Likely, I'll have my brother scan the books for his approval, but I would like to get some informed recommendations from this board. As for me, all of the love for The Rising has piqued my interest and I'll add it to my own reading pile. I've got several books to get to first, though.

As far as your nephew, the book "RISEN" by J. Knight may be up his alley. In my opinion it sucked ass. But that's because it wasn't a conventional Livingdeadeatingfleshandgorefest. However some may like that fact... I didn't. The book is a more of mystery book than a Horror book but it still tries to be scary at certain points. The "Living dead" in "RISEN" are people in a small Mid West town who recently died. They come back to life -good as new- and go back to their "normal" lives. No rotting zombies in this book. There is some sex in this book and there's definitely violence. from Amazon.com

Don't know if someone already said it but The Walking Dead comic book is pretty good. It has a Dawn of the Dead feel to it. The classic version not the remake.
