Unfortunately, most publishers don't accept unsolicited manuscripts, which means you need to get representation first.
What kind of writing experience do you have?

I've been writing several books off and on the last 5 years. I get going on one for 50-60 pages, then I'll take a few weeks off and then start 50-60 pages on a different book.
Good thing I've got another well paying job.

Actually, I had been kicking the idea around myself for the last few years. I really wanted to do it, but I never had an idea that got me excited about it, until about 4 months ago. I've been spending some of that time doing research and trying to establish some basic rules for myself and plot ideas. Somehow, I can't bring myself to come up with a title yet, because the idea keeps evolving. Who knows, it might be completely different by the time I'm done...
Best of luck to you, dukeofurl.

What I've read online in writers groups is that many publishers do accept manuscripts from newcomers (send a query first) and that it's far preferable to have no agent than a bad one. Write your book (good luck ) then try to sell it yourself or get an agent--just remember money flows towards the author, and don't let yourself get scammed by "agents" who charge up front fees or vanity presses that make you pay to have your book "published".
